For the first time in weeks, Heeseung and Mercy found their schedules aligning, granting them a rare opportunity for shared free time. Their chosen retreat? A private forest by a secluded lake, a hidden gem shown to Mercy by her grandmother. Getting there was apparently a challenge, according to Heeseung. 'Follow the path,' Mercy had casually instructed, prompting a baffled look from Heeseung. What path? The one she knew, of course. At least one of them was familiar with the winding trails of the forest and the route to the tranquil lake.

'I find it peaceful out here,' Mercy remarked, dropping her bag onto the pier. 'Rarely does anyone ever come here.'

Heeseung followed suit, placing his bag beside hers. 'It is very quiet.'

'We used to sit here,' Mercy shared as she strolled toward the water. 'My brother and I.'

Noticing Heeseung hesitating, she turned and flashed him a small smile. 'Come. Do not be shy.' Her outstretched hand beckoned him closer, a gesture that surprised even herself. What was she doing?

'I'm not,' Heeseung assured with a nervous chuckle, reaching for her hand. The simple act felt right — his hand enveloping hers. A heartbeat later, and Mercy could have sworn hers skipped a beat.

Once comfortably seated on the pier, shoes and socks abandoned beside them, their feet dipped into the water. Mercy released a heavy sigh. 'This is the life, Hee. I wish I could spend the last of my days here.'

'You still have much to live for,' Heeseung reminded her.

'Oh, yes,' Mercy chuckled. 'But once my time is over, this is where I will spend it, I'm sure of it.'

'Then I'll make sure to keep you company.'

Her heart skipped again, not solely because of his comment but because, for a fleeting moment, she thought she saw movement on the other side of the lake. A mere flicker in the tranquil setting that sparked a twinge of uncertainty in the midst of their peaceful haven.
