I wanted to try a little fantasy thing, so yeah. Wanna let you guys know that not everything you fear is as scary as it seems at first <3
Darkness surrounded him as he walked over the pathway. Fallen branches hurt his bare feet and dry leaves stuck to his heels.
The moon stood high in the sky, full and beaming with light, illuminating the otherwise dark woods where the trees failed to cover up the ground below. It was a beautiful night, with stars scattered all over the dark sky, not a single cloud visible.
The pounding of his heart matched the thudding of his feet on the ground as he ran. He panted, breath coming out in short huffs. He wasn't used to running and even if he was, this would've been a challenge.
He didn't remember how he got here. Didn't remember how he ended up lost in the woods, clothes torn and shoes gone, running from whatever it was that he could hear chasing after him. He didn't hear anything if he was running, but he knew that if he'd stop and listen closely, the sound of branches breaking and leaves rustling behind him would fill the air. He didn't need to see it to know it was there.
An owl suddenly appeared from the leaves, hooting and flying up from the tree above him, scaring him and causing him to trip on the mud and branches under his feet. The ground was solid as his cheek made contact with it. It hurt, a stinging feeling blooming over his face and he groaned, moving his arms and lifting himself up. His muscles ached under his weight as he pulled himself from the ground, dusting his dirty clothes off for what it was worth and running a hand over his face.
Then he heard it. The sound that had been haunting him for days now, coming up behind him and getting closer and closer the longer he was standing still. He couldn't stay here, he knew that. Running hurt, feet sore and energy drained. But he knew he had to. Didn't want to get caught by whatever it was that was following him.
So he did, mustering up all the energy that he had left and forcing his legs to work, beginning to walk, soon breaking out in a run. A half broken run, with him stumbling every few steps.
He couldn't anymore. Couldn't continue like this. He was hungry, hadn't eaten for days and he was thirsty, hadn't seen a lake or river in a long long time. He just wanted to go home - if he even had one, he couldn't remember, have a warm meal and go to bed. Instead he was stuck here, lost in the woods with this thing following him.
His feet hurt. His heart was pounding. His eyesight was getting a bit blurry due to the lack of sleep and he could feel himself slipping away. When his foot got caught behind a protruding root of the large trees next to the pathway, he didn't fight it. He let himself fall, bracing himself on his forearms and rolling onto his side when his weak body hit the forest ground and laying still.
