Every Queen Has Her Minions

Present Day

Sometimes I have this nightmare where I was born ugly and that every time someone looked at me they would scream, "Monster, get away from me!"

I had that dream again last night. I have been having this dream every year the night before I have to return to school after the summer since my freshman year.

I don't know why I keep having it but if I had to make a wild guess I would say it was because even though I looked pitch perfect on the outside, I could admit to myself that I was somewhat of a monster inside. Maybe that dream signifies that one day I would magically turn inside out and the world would see me for the flaws that I try so hard to cover up.

After having a night like that, I got up an hour earlier than usual because I needed to look my very best.

I pulled on my black stockings, a black mini skirt with pleats and a neatly pressed white shirt with gold buttons and long sleeves that was tucked inside the skirt. I finished it with three inch black Louis Vuitton heels. After dressing, I sat in front of my dresser and took another thirty minutes putting on my makeup and fixing my long brunette hair.

When I was completely finished, I drew back a little and took a good hard look at myself in the mirror. I looked perfect but on the inside my stomach was doing flips because of the lingering feeling of self doubt that the dream left me with.

I steeled my shoulders and I swore I could feel my mother's presence behind me with both her hands on my shoulder. I could hear her saying to me,

"Darling Laura relax, who cares what chaos you have going on inside you. Look how beautiful you look on the outside, that's what matter."

Though I knew my mother wasn't here, in fact she'd been dead for seven years, her words still brought me some comfort. I smiled and the fragment of my imagination that was my mother winked at me and squeezed my shoulder.

Well that was settled, I felt ready to face the world. I pulled out my phone and dialled Fiona's number. She answered on the third ring and before she could say a word I said,

"Come pick me up, I'm ready. Don't keep me waiting," I said into the phone and then hung up. I didn't need a response I knew she would be here in no time.

Fiona was my 'best friend'. I met her in my freshman year in high school and we had bonded over our love for the same senior boys and newest fashion. She was a sweet enough girl but she had absolutely no back bone and because of who I was I bent it to suit my pleasure.

I looked at the clock that I had positioned right above my bedroom door.

It was 7:43.

Fiona had two minutes to get here or all hell would break loose. I knew she lived only five minutes away and made sure to remind her every once in a while that when I called her to pick me up for school or any other activity she better be on time or calling me from the emergency room to cancel.

Right on time at 7:45 I heard the horn for Fiona's car blow twice and I smiled to myself. I picked up my bag from the chair I had placed it on and made my way downstairs. On my way to the door I heard my father call out from the kitchen,

"Have a good day at school honey, I love ..."

I shut the front door on the rest of his words; I didn't need to hear it. I stepped outside and looked down my drive way and spotted Fiona's blue BMW. I made my way to the car and as I drew closer I could see Rachel and Heather in the back seat.

I opened the passenger seat in the front that was left empty for me. I entered and said, "Hey girls, how was the summer. Any good hook ups?"

Heather giggled in the back and said, "We saw each other yesterday, why are you talking like we haven't seen each other since school closed."

I rolled my eyes and said, "Heather how many times must I tell you if you don't have anything sensible to say, say nothing at all. You went on a tour of Europe for the whole summer so obviously I didn't see you except for yesterday after you returned."

"Sorry," I heard her mumble in the back.

I could tell that Fiona could feel the awkwardness that had settled in the car because she said way to loudly, "Wow Laura, I love your shirt."

"Thanks Fi," I said and looked over at her yellow tank top and short white soft pants, "You look good yourself."

Rachel stuck her head in front and out stretched her hand. It held the plain black Starbuck coffee that she had to get for me every morning.

"Here," she said.

"Thanks Rach, aren't you just the sweetest," I said taking the cup from her. I leaned forward and turn on Fiona's music player.

I was blasted by the sound of Rihanna's Diamonds and though I know the popularity of the sound was fading, I left it there and started to sing the song from the top of my lungs not caring if I sounded a little off key.

I think that officially broke the tension because I could hear Heather and Rachel singing softly in the back. Soon all of us were singing and after Fiona yelled for us to shut up about five times, she finally joined in.

By the time we pulled up at our high school, the car was filled with loud screaming and boisterous laughter. We all stepped out of the car at the same time and I looked up at our school sprawled out in front of me.

The queen has arrived at her palace.

As I post more chapters it will become clearer as well as I know the synopsis I have in the beginning isn't the best, I'm working on writing a better one. Also please leave some feedback on this chapter, I'm not sure how good it was and I want to know your opinion.
