Richie stared at the small tube in his palm. Eddie accidentally left his chapstick at Richie's house the evening before when they'd hung out and watched movies and ate pizza.
The label was peeled off and Richie didn't know what kind of chapstick it was. He was a little curious, but he felt weird just...smelling it. So he just gazed at it mysteriously, wishing he'd knew what kind of chapstick it was.
Why does Richie even care? is probably what you're wondering. Well, Richie Trashmouth Tozier had a crush on Eddie. A huge one, really. He'd seen cute boys before, but it wasn't like he got the chance to get to know any of them. Nor was it a good idea to pull a Trashmouth and flirt with them.
But Eddie was his best friend and he knew everything about him. It was easy to hide his crush on him, and it was easy to what Richie called "jokingly" flirt with him because, well. They were best friends. And best friends are always weird.
Eddie had grown used to it, but that didn't mean he didn't pretend to be annoyed or shove Richie's face away when he made jokes about his mom or kissy lips at his face with exaggerated sounds.
Right now, though, Richie was shoving the chapstick tube in his pocket and hopping on his bike. He and Eddie had planned to meet up at some point today, and even though they didn't specify, Richie headed there now. It was after breakfast, late morning. This gave them all the rest of the day, so long as Mrs. K didn't mind Richie staying for lunch and dinner.
Richie cringed at the thought. Sonia didn't really like Richie, so he's heard. Eddie had told him she thought Richie was a "bad influence" with his "trashy mouth" and "naughty language." But that didn't stop Eddie from hanging out with him, anyways. Nor did it keep Richie away from Eddie.
On his way there, Richie half-wondered what would happen if somehow Eddie's mother had found out he was gay. It would've been a shame, Richie thought, because Sonia would probably say something along the lines of not wanting her "baby boy tainted by a curse from the devil." Richie was the curse, Richie thought. Diseased and only "liking" Eddie for bad things.
Of course that wasn't true, but Richie practically knew Mrs. Kaspbrak like the back of his own hand from the things Eddie told him. She was one of those people.
Richie laughed to himself as he pulled into the Kaspbrak driveway, leaning his bike against the mailbox. He fumbled with the chapstick in his pocket and walked up to the door, letting out an obnoxious yawn as he did so. He rang the doorbell and teetered on his toes, waiting. Richie heard footsteps that he just knew were too large to be Eddie's. Oh no, he thought. Eddie's mom.
As many jokes as he made about her, Richie really didn't like Sonia much. She had this..attitude, and of course what Richie had heard from Eddie about her thinking of him as a "bad influence."
The door opened and there towered Sonia Kaspbrak.
Richie sheepishly grinned. "G'morning, Mrs. K."
Sonia narrowed her eyes and gazed at him. "Ah. Eddie's friend. What's your name again?"
"Richie."
"Richie. How could I forget?" A crooked smile grew on her face. "Well, Richie. It's good to see you. But Eddie-Bear is in the shower right now."
Richie bit the inside of his cheek. "Mind if I wait around for him to finish up?"
"He might be awhile. Eddie likes to make sure he's extra clean."
"I don't mind the wait."
Sonia gave Richie a bit of a dirty look but turned around and shuffled inside, inviting Richie in with a mumble.
