It all started in nursery school. I was three years old, scared and alone when Mum left the school. That was before I met Niall. He was a little brunette boy (Niall was brown haired as a child) and he had a great smile that attracted me from across the room.
"Hi, I'm Carolyn," I had said. "May I see your bear?" I pointed to the teddy bear he was clutching.
"You can see it but no touching," he responded.
That was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
Niall was my best friend since the first time I saw him. But it all ended in sixth grade. My family was moving from Ireland to England. Basically meaning I'd never see Niall again. But here's the thing - I always liked him more than a friend. I had kept it a secret for our whole friendship and I vowed to tell him someday. But that day never came. I'll never forget the last time I saw Niall.
"Bye, Niall," I had said, hugging him.
"Bye, Carolyn," he said. As we pulled out of the hug, he kissed me. On the cheek. And then I had to leave and I never saw him again. Well, that's a lie. I did see him again. Just not in person.
2013. The world has a case of One Direction infection. And there's no cure.
I sit at my computer and look at the picture on my bulletin board. It's Niall, I think fondly. I wonder what happened to him. And then it hits me hard. I'm looking at a picture of One Direction on the computer and THERE HE IS. It's Niall! My childhood best friend! How could I not realize it earlier? I think, looking at his picture. Yep, it's Niall all right. How could I not realize that he was famous? I guess I never made the connection. I look at him. When I knew him he was just another boy to everyone else. But he was special to me. He was my first crush, and come to think of it, I've never really liked another boy since. But now he's a celebrity heartthrob. Every girl dreams of being his girlfriend. And imagine, I almost was.
