I remember when I first met, Caesar. A cute baby ape. I was fifteen at the time that I met him and now I can't imagine a life without him. I turned my head to the sky, seeing the three year old ape looking at me through the artic window. I smiled and waved before bursting through the door. The ape ran downstairs and hugged me. Oh, CaesarI hugged him and sat down on the ground. I missed you so much, I murmured and buried my face in his fur. He made some noises. He wanted to do our special handshake. How was your day? he gestured. I shrugged, well, what shall I say I sighed and walked over to the kitchen with Caesar on my heels. It suck honestly but I cant complain, I said and shrugged. He cocked his head to the side. some kids arent nice Caesar. I sighed while making myself a cup of tea. The ape stared at me for several minutes before making another gesture with his hands. Bullies? I gave a small nod. Something like that people dont like if youre different. They think I am strange I would have been dead a long time ago if it wasnt for Will saving my life its really hard to fit in, you know, I sighed, sitting down while waiting.
He pointed at my cat ears and tail. They arent strange to me others are just jealous, he signed. You think? Why would they be jealous? I asked. Because you are special, he said. I smiled and embraced him. If it wasnt for you I would have gone nuts already, I mumbled and got up. Heather. I smiled at Will. Hes not my father but I do call him that. How was school? he asked. It was fine, I muttered. He passed me. With my cup of tea, I headed upstairs to make homework and relax but before I did that, I removed my jacket and revealed my bruised and bloody arms. Looking at my stomach, it had turned purple and was quite sore as well. I hadnt even noticed Caesar watching me until I turned around. He looked angry. I gestured him to come in and lock the door. This isnt from one day. He gestured. I shook my head and grabbed a wet towel. No, this isnt from one day this is from months, I said. He sat down beside me and wiped a tear off my face. Can you keep an secret? He gave a small nod. I did something stupid. Like really stupid and got myself into trouble with that, I said. He slightly cocked his head to the side. I hurt someone I looked at my claws. It was bad, Caesar really bad. I scratched his face open. I didnt mean to hurt him but he attacked me. The principal suspended me they might dont want me back due to aggressive behavior.
I looked at him. It was self-defense not an planned attack, he stated. I still got the blame, I muttered. He hugged me. Anyway, shall we do something fun? I am not in the mood to do my homework anyway, I said. If it cheers you up, I will do anything, he gestured. I smiled and jumped off the seat. Lets go to the woods I said. He excitedly jumped up and down before following me downstairs. I had my own car, the old car I could have from dad. You want to sit in the passenger seat? He nodded and I watched him hop in. What about Will? he gestured. I bet he doesnt mind I said and drove off. I turned up the volume on the radio as our favorite song was played and I sang along.
When we arrived, I sprinted after Caesar through the woods and watched him climbs. He stopped and looked down, gesturing me to follow him. I kicked my shoes aside and with my claws, I managed to reach him. I have never been this high where do we go? He climbed higher and higher. I have never done anything like this before, but I loved the feeling and thrill. We reached the top and he pointed at the golden gate bridge and the city behind it. The view is amazing here, huh? I asked. He sat down for a moment and so did I. Hey Caes? He looked at me. You would never leave me, right? He shook his head and even offered me a weak smile. Shall we make a promise? The ape fully turned towards me. No matter what happens in the future I promise that if you need me, I will help you. I will always be there for you just like youre always there for me when I need you. You are more than just an ape you are my best friend my brother. He pressed his forehead against mine before gesturing. I will do the same for you my family. I smiled and shook his hand.
We returned home and dad wasnt happy. Not because I took Caes but because the principal had called. I got a phone call, he said. Caesar sat down and looked at one another. I am sorry I muttered and looked down. This is serious Heather, he snapped. I gave a small nod. It was self-defense, I added quietly. I dont want to hear it go to your room, he snapped and pointed at the stars. Caesar, you stay, Will warned as the ape got up as well. I glanced at Caes before walking upstairs and laying down for a moment. I hugged the pillow and shut my eyes, thinking about everything that had happened today. I felt stuck and angry. I tried so hard to fit in, but it seems like a hopeless case. No one accepts me and no one wants me. Caesar is the only true friend I have and without him Id be lost.
My eyes were teary as I opened my eyes and looked at the photo on the nightstand. Taken when Caes was just a baby and I was feeding him. I would never forget the moment when I first saw him. Especially in the years after, we grew closer and closer. We were both different. Hes an ape obviously but super intelligent and I am a neko, made in a lab. Although he didnt know how it felt to be in a lab, he did somehow relate to me for being different.
