Remus Lupin

Dumbledore's office, Hogwarts

November 1, 1981

'Sirius- Sirius was the t-traitor?' Remus gasped in disbelief. Dumbledore nodded glumly.

'And he- Lily and James are... dead? Gone? And Peter too...'

'Yes, Peter confronted Black earlier this morning.' Dumbledore confirmed.

'Peter went after Sirius?' Remus repeated in scepticism, 'Headmaster-'

'Several witnesses were there, twelve muggles were killed and so was Pettigrew. Black blew the place up.' Dumbledore interrupted.

'No.' Remus croaked, shaking his head. 'Sirius would never- James was his brother - he would never betray him.'

'Black admitted to being the reason they were dead.'

'He admitted to it?'

'Yes, it was one of the many things he told the Aurors as they took him away.'

'How did they manage to get to Sirius? I know him - he would never allow himself to get caught,' Remus wondered.

'He went willingly.'

'That is absolutely ridiculous! He would never - and he would never betray Lily and James! I know it! When's his trial?'

'He isn't getting one. He's being convicted in court as we speak.'

'WHAT?' Remus yelled, standing up. 'HE ISN'T EVEN GETTING A BLOODY TRIAL? WHAT THE FUCK? I'M GOING THERE RIGHT NOW!' Remus grabbed his cloak and made for the door, but Dumbledore sealed it before he could exit.

'There is nothing you can do Remus!'

'BUT YOU CAN DO SOMETHING! YOU'RE CHIEF WARLOCK! YOU CAN DEMAND A TRIAL!'

'It will be of no use. He has already been convicted!'

'THEN DO SOMETHING!' Remus screamed, 'DO SOMETHING! HE'S INNOCENT AND WE BOTH KNOW IT!'

'Remus sit down.'

'USE LEGILIMENCY! OR VERITASERUM OR-'

'Remus sit down!'

'HE IS INNOCENT!'

'SIT DOWN!' Dumbledore roared, causing Remus to fall silent. 'Sirius Black was convicted with fifteen deaths! He was the Potters secret keeper!'

'Fifteen?' Remus repeated, 'It's sixteen - Harry.'

'Harry Potter survived. He vanquished the dark lord.'

'Harry is alive?'

'Yes.'

'How?' Remus croaked in disbelief.

'Nobody knows.'

'Where is he now?'

'With his Aunt and Uncle.'

'But Lily- she said they're horrible! He should be with Sirius!'

'Remus-'

'NO! Sirius is innocent, I know he is! You'll see, one day you'll see!' Remus promised before stomping out of the office.
