(A/N: I couldn't think of a good title for this chapter so this is the only thing I could think of. It seems a bit vague...)
Harry and I went inside Lupin's office. He was there, pacing in front of a large trunk. "You're sure about this, Harry, Anna? This is very advanced magic. Well beyond Ordinary Wizarding Level." Lupin said.
"If Black can fight the Dementors," I started.
"We need to know how to fight them too." Harry finished with a determined look.
Lupin studied us and nodded. "Very well. The spell I'm going to teach you is called the Patronus Charm. Ever hear of it?"
As Harry shook his head, I said, "I heard about it in a book."
"Excellent. Let me explain, Harry. A Patronus is a kind of positive force. For the wizard or witch who can conjure one, the Patronus works something like a shield. The Dementor feeds on it instead of them." The trunk rattled violently. "But in order for it to work, you must think of a memory. And not just any. This memory needs to be a very happy one. Very powerful."
I thought about it, and I could tell Harry was, too. I thought about when Hermione and Isabella came back from being Petrified. At last, we nodded.
"Got something? Good. Let it fill you up. Lose yourself in it. Then speak the incantation: Expecto Patronum. Without your wand..." Lupin nodded.
"Expecto Patronum." we chanted
"Right then. Shall we? You first, Anna. Harry, you must stand in front of your sister, since her boggart isn't a dementor." Lupin said. Under Harry's uneasy look, he added, "But don't worry. Annabelle will get rid of it. If she can't, that goes for you too Anna, cast the Boggart-Banishing Spell."
I nodded and raised my wand. Lupin watched me carefully, before gripping the lid of the trunk. He flung the lid open, and out flew a dementor.
"Expecto Patronum," I said. Nothing happened so I tried again, "Expecto Patronum." Still, nothing happened, and Harry looked faint, so I just cried, "Riddikulus." And the boggart/dementor disappeared.
Never, I mean never, have I failed to do a spell. Even if it was first try, I usually succeeded in simple spells. What was wrong with me? At Harry's shocked look, I said, "Oh, Salazar, I'm sorry, Harry. I guess I thought that I could do it. Could I try again?"
Lupin nodded. "Yes, but let your brother have a chance." He motioned for Harry to get his wand ready. Once Harry seemed ready, Lupin flung the trunk open.
"Expecto...Patronum..." Harry murmured. Then, I heard it. A scream. I've never heard of it before. "Expecto... Expecto..." I heard Harry struggling, and I snapped back to reality, as if I never heard the scream. Harry fell to the floor and then Lupin came over and pushed him into a sitting position. "Here we go, come on, sit up. Deep breaths. I didn't expect you two to do it the first time. It would have been remarkable. Here, eat this. You'll feel better. Want one, Anna?" Lupin gave Harry a Chocolate Frog. "No thank you, sir." I replied.
Harry took a bite. "That's one nasty Dementor."
"Boggart, Harry. The real thing would be much, much worse. Just out of interest, what were you thinking of?" Lupin corrected.
"The first time I rode a broom." Harry responded.
"What about you? What memory were you thinking of?" Lupin asked.
"The time when Isa and Hermione came back from being Petrified."
"Those are not good enough, Harry and Anna. Not nearly." Lupin said.
I thought back in first year, when I met Draco and my other friends. And the Mirror of Erised, what I saw there. Also, what Daphne told me about Draco. Then I realized that Harry was talking. "...it's not happy exactly. I mean, it is. It's the happiest I've ever felt. But it's complicated."
"Is it strong?" Lupin asked. Harry nodded, and the professor turned to me. "How about you? Have a memory yet?"
I nodded.
"Then let's give it a try." Lupin nodded.
I got ready, and thought hard about Draco. I mean, him and my other friends. Harry stood in front of me.
Lupin opened the case and the dementor floated out again. "Expecto Patronum!" I said with more force than last time. To my shock, a blue-white light appeared between me and the dementor. The light pushed the dementor back into the trunk. Lupin waved his wand and the case's lid closed. The professor looked at me with a smile. "Excellent work, Anna. That was brilliant." I smiled. "You next, Harry."
"Just do it." My brother got his wand ready, looking more ready than before. Lupin opened the case again and the dementor flew out. "Expecto Patronum!" Harry's hand trembled. A second later, a white light came from Harry's wand and it hovered between Harry and the dementor. The dementor faltered slightly. "Riddikulus!" Lupin said and the dementor disappeared. He turned to Harry with a smile. "Well done, Harry. Well done."
Harry said, "I think I've had enough. For today."
"Me too." I agreed.
Lupin nodded and watched us leave.
