Chapter Nine: Bitch Please. Who Needs to Go 15 on a Flat, Straight Road?
I got home, probably around five o'clock. We'd fallen asleep and then woke up for the sunrise. I quietly opened the door, and snuck past the kitchen.
"So, would my lovely daughter like to tell me why she's coming home at, five-fifteen in the morning?" Dad's voice floated out of the kitchen. Busted.
"Well, I was sorta watching the sunrise..." I mumbled. Dad came out into the hall, coffee mug in hand, still in pajamas.
"With who?" Dad asked seriously.
"Oh, um, well you see-" I stopped and gave Dad a sheepish smile. He didn't smile back. I gulped slightly and forced out, "I was with Eli."
"Delattre?"
"Yes," I whispered waiting for the reprimand.
"Well, that's okay then, next time leave a note or something," he took another drink of his coffee. I stood there stunned beyond belief. "Teenagers these days," Dad walked back into the kitchen muttering. Still shocked, I managed to get my feet to move me up the stairs to my bed. In which I promtly became dead to the world.
"Piper?" Dad called from the door of my bedroom.
"Mmmhmf," I muttered, my face buried in my pillow.
"Do you want some lunch?" he asked.
"Okay," I yawned and rolled over. Apparently too far, I discovered, when I hit the floor with a loud thump. This kind of stuff only happens to me... My phone buzzed on the bedside table above me and I shoved myself unwillingly to my feet.
Can you come in today for your first day of work?
Helen. I grinned happily and immediately replied.
Of course
"Hey Dad? Helen wants me to work my first shift today!" I yelled down the stairs.
"You're working at the diner? Why didn't you tell me?" he asked, taken by surprise.
"It kind of slipped my mind, and I really have to go," I edged towards the door.
"Alright kid, but take the sandwich with you. Don't be working on an empty stomach," he handed me said sandwich and his keys. "Be careful."
"I will, bye Dad," I closed the door behind me and hopped into the driver's seat. I drove to the diner, breaking every speed limit (I mean, bitch please, who needs to go 15 on a flat, straight road?), and made it there in about five minutes. That's just how small this town is. And how fast you drive.
"I'm here Helen!" I cried as I saw her at the checkout and takeout desk.
"Thank goodness," she said looking relieved. "We need to train you and it just about slipped my mind!"
"Alright," I laughed. "Will I be at the checkout or waitressing?"
"Think you can handle waitressing?" she asked, handing the customer their change back.
"I think so," I decided.
"Okay, so here's your pad and pen, straws, and extra napkins. Oh, and here's your nametag, work shirt and your apron," she handed me said essentials and pointed to a table with a family of four at it. "That's your first table. Don't worry about memorizing orders or anything yet, that will come later as you learn."
"Okay," I took my things to the bathroom, and got changed into my new shirt. I pinned the nametag to my polo. I tied on the apron and stuff my paper and pen, etc. into the pockets. I pulled my straight red hair back into a loose ponytail. I walked out of the bathroom and over to the table.
"Hello, I'm Piper and I'll be your sever this afternoon," I smiled brightly at the family. "Can I get you anything to drink?"
"I'll get a Diet Coke," the boy ordered. He looked up and grinned in recognition, "Hey Piper, I didn't know you worked here!"
"Just started today," I smiled back at Landon. The rest of his family ordered their drinks and I went into the back to get the drinks. I came back out a few minutes later with their drinks and for their orders.
After I brought out their food, I came back to check on them every so often, juggling that between my other tables that were in the area Helen assigned me. My shift ended at six as we began to switch between early dinner to dinner. Helen pulled me over to the side before I left,
"That was the best a newcomer's ever done here." She looked surprised. "You were fantastic! How and where did you learn to waitress like that?"
"The hard way at my old home," I gave her a weak smile.
"PIPER! Get in here with that food quick!" Matilda screeched.
"Coming," I sighed, bringing Matilda and her friends their appetizers faster than any restaurant could have.
"She's very efficient, Tilda," one of her friends commented.
"I know," she laughed, "She's got an excellent training regime." Yeah, by backhanding me everytime I did something wrong.
I shook my head, ridding it of the memory. I was never telling anyone about that life.
"Oh," Helen frowned slightly, "Do you want to talk about it?"
"No, not really," I shook my head, "I better get going." I walked to the door, before sprinting to the car once I was out of her sight. I stopped short when I noticed the person leaning against my car, leather jacket and all. "Eli?"
"Hey," he smiled at me. "So, want to go somewhere?"
"Sure, just let me drop the car off at home," I told him.
"Not a problem, I'll follow you there," he got on his bike to follow me back to my house.
I parked the car in the garage and poked my head in the house,
"Dad! I'm going out with Eli!" I shouted in the doorway.
"No need to yell, Piper, I'm right here," my Dad appeared. "But have fun, okay? And bring her back before tomorrow!" The last part he yelled to Eli. I blushed slightly and smacked his arm.
"Daaadd," I whined.
"What, pumpkin?"
"You're embarrassing me."
"It's in the Dad handbook. It's a manditory policy," he told me with a straight face.
Parents, I thought as I walked back out to Eli and his bike.

Whoohoo! I updated! Sorry again for the long wait, but at least it was only a month this time. I think. Anyway, I'll try to get on a more regular schedule maybe every two weeks or something. Every week may not be enough time for me to get one done with my schedule. I've entered this in the Wattpad Writing Contest as a motive to write more and more quickly. If I make it to the final round, this will (hopefully) be finished by June 20. If you are also interested in entering something of your own, the link it below! The post contains everything you need to know, and I suggest that you fan the host so that you get the updates! If your going to enter, GOOD LUCK!VOTE.COMMENT.FAN.
