Prologue

"Piper Rose Mason, you need to control your temper! You cannot hit other children, if they make you angry!" Mommy scolded me.

"Sorry Mommy," I ducked my head, ashamed that I'd made her mad. I had an uncanny knack for getting into heaps of trouble. Her frown softened and she almost smiled.

"Come here, Rosie," She scooped me up and I giggled happily. "Do you want to go to the park?"

"Yes, Mommy," I ran up to my room to put on my shoes. Mommy held my hand as we walked to the park. Well, Mommy walked and I skipped along next to her. I immediately ran for the swings yanking her hand behind me. I swung for awhile before becoming bored and running for the slide.

Half an hour later, I'd managed to wear myself out. Mommy gave me a piggyback ride all the way back to the apartment where we ate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (with the crusts cut off of course), milk and carrot sticks. I begged Mommy for a bowl of ice cream. She gave in with a sigh,

“I'm going to have to go to the store now. You stay right here with your coloring books and be good until I get back, okay?”

“Okays Mommy,” I giggled and hugged her. I sat at the counter scribbling in my coloring books, like the good girl Mommy asked me to be until she came home.

But, Mommy never came home. This was the last memory I had of her. I was six when she died in a car crash going to the store for some ice cream, after dinner that day. All I have is a picture of the two of us, me smiling widely and sitting on Mom's lap inside her locket. In the picture Mom was giving her soft smile that was only there when she was truly happy. Being a single Mom had been hard, but we'd made do. She refused to talk about my Dad and would cry when I asked. I never understood, but the pain of losing the one you love, must have been a hard thing to live with.
