Chapter Five: Every time I Turn Around, I'm Lookin' Up, You're Lookin' Down
"Piper! Come on, you're going to be late to school!" I groaned as my Dad yelled up the stairs. I rolled over and glared blearily at my alarm clock. 7:45, it blinked back. I threw on a plain yellow v-neck with a white tank underneath and a pair of slightly ripped jeans. I brushed my teeth as I did my mascara with the other hand. Learn to multitask: it's a great tool. I did my eyeliner in record time, for once I didn't mess it up and end up with eyeliner on my nose. Grabbing my bag and my jacket, I ran to the stairs and slid down the banister to the hallway. Never breaking stride, I grabbed my converse and continued out the door to where Rose was waiting to take me to school. She had an old classic, a Firebird. I hopped into the passenger seat,
"Nice car." Rose laughed dryly.
"It's a gift from my old man, in hopes that he can get back on my good side. He left my mom and I a few years ago," She glared at the steering wheel but started down the road towards school.
"I'm sorry," I told her. I was, truly, because I understood her anger.
"Don't be, it's not your fault," she scolded me.
"But I understand," I picked at my cheap, chipping nail polish. At least she didn't have to live with Matilda.
"How?" she snorted. "You have your parents and a prefect life."
"I wish. My mom's dead, I lived in an awful foster home for about eleven years and I just found out my dad didn't know about me. My mom never told him and I just found him," I blinked back tears as I talked about Mom. Rose sucked in a sharp breath,
"Guess we both have pretty sucky lives, huh?"
"No kidding," I gave a shaky laugh. I had major trust issues but, I'd made friends, and at least one of them understood me completely. We pulled into the school's parking lot. Rose spotted Sophia and Landon over on a bench together. They were insanely cute, almost too cute. Maybe in about a million years I could have something like that.
"Hey guys it's..." Rose checked her phone, "Three minutes to the bell." They separated their lip lock, Sophia turning pink.
"Hey!" she grinned, sort of embarrassed. Landon kissed her cheek, as a goodbye, and Sophia linked arms with me and Rose. This could have been a really good day if Isobel hadn't dropped down in front of me, seemingly out of no where.
"I know that you're Eli's lab partner, don't you dare continue that. I demand that you demand a switch!" She demanded that I DEMAND a change? Wow, quality vocabulary there.
"So that your skanky ass can have my seat and I can have yours? No thanks, even though it's impossible I might catch an STD sitting in your old seat," I pulled Sophia and Rose away from her. Rose looked ready to punch her and Sophia just looked scared.
"So, Sophia! Landon figured out that you're probably more attracted to your friends than him?" She yelled at our turned backs. "I mean youarea Les right!" Sophia's eyes filled with tears, threatening to spill over. I stopped them with an impulse decision.
"Guys we're skipping today," I declared.
"I'm in," Rose grinned.
"Same," Sophia sniffled slightly. I knew the perfect place.
"If we leave now, then no one will ever know we were here,"I advised them to run as fast as we could out of a back door. We reached Rose's car in a fit of giggles from the janitor chasing us. He was.... Larger than normal, I guess. "You know how to get to Helen's diner?"
