(Eren's p.o.v)
I slung my bag over my shoulder and kicked the wall in impatience. She was late. She was never late.
"Eren!"
I heard a shout from behind and saw Mikasa running towards me from the school gates, her locks of ebony hair swaying in the breeze.
"You took long enough." I mumbled to her. She looked at me and sighed.
"I was just returing a book back to the library. Should we go?"
"Yeah"
We both walked, side by side, past the school building and through the streets; heading towards the Costa Coffee shop. I looked over at Mikasa as she scanned through instagram on her phone.
"How was your day at school?" She asked, absent mindedly.
I bit my lip and hesitated before answering.
"I got called into Mr Hannes' office"
Mikasa looked up just as a sharp gust of wind blew right into our faces and she tightened the red scarf around her neck; the one I gave her seven years ago.
"Why?" She asked, sounding as though she didn't really want to hear.
I rubbed my bruised knuckles and looked down at my feet.
"Armin was getting bullied, again. What do you expect me to do? Just sit back and watch?"
Mikasa sighed again.
"No, just tell Mr Hannes first and don't get your fists involved."
I rolled my eyes. Mikasa was such a teacher's pet. Always getting straight A's. She was top of the class while I dangled at the bottom. Dad's always proud of her. Ever since mum died, it's been so clear that she reminds him of her. She's beautiful, smart and caring just like mum. But when dad looks in my eyes he doesn't even see me as his son. Mikasa isn't even related to mum and dad or me. She was adopted into the family when we were nine. Seven years ago. Yet I'm always the outcast.
We reached Costa and both walked in, out of the crisp fall weather and into the warm, cosy place. I dumped my bag on the floor and sat at one of the tables; resting my head in my hands. Today had been shit. I had got into trouble for being late. Then for not doing my stupid biology homework. And then for beating up that asshole that was giving Armin a hard time. He deserved it. When I opened my eyes I saw Mikasa at the counter, ordering a Chai Latte and an Expresso for me. Our usual. Then I looked down at my hands, raw from the cold and with a few purple blotches from the fight earlier. As I liften them up to rest my chin, my school jacket sleeve slipped down, revealing my wrists. I examined them. The cuts were still visible, scarred deep into my skin. Would they ever go away? I doubt it. They weren't made that long ago. Mikasa came over with the drinks and I quickly pulled up my sleeves and rested my arms on the table. She smiled at me and sipped her Chai Latte pulling out her phone from her pocket as it buzzed from a text message.
"Who is it?" I asked, peering over.
"Annie." She said, typing out a reply.
"Whatever." I mumble, pulling out a small box from my school bag and slipping it into my pocket discreetly under the table.
"Im going outside."
Mikasa looked up, narrowing her eyes at me.
"Why?"
I shrugged and turned to go but Mikasa reached out and grabbed my jacket gently to stop me. She felt the box inside my pocket and sighed. Then glared at me.
"No."
"Leave me alone."
"You're not going out for a cigarette, Eren. I won't let you."
I pulled away from her grasp and glared back at her, before pushing the door open and going back out into the cold. I turned into an alley by the side of the shop, away from the wind and the people walking through the streets. The alley was dirty and dark at the end but I didn't care. I leaned against the brick wall and put a cigarette between my lips, reaching in my pocket for a lighter. I was just sparking a small flame when I heard a shout from the back of the alley.
"Eren Jaeger!"
I turned to see five boys from the year above emerging from the shadows and approaching me. I recognised one as Ymir's brother, but the I had no idea who the hell the other's were. But I knew they were in that dodgy gang that hung out in the parking lot and did drugs in broad daylight. Morons.
"Yeah?"
"Your that faggot from the year below." One of the boy's smirked.
I felt my jaw tighten and my fists clench with rage. The boys came closer.
"Fuck off." I growled.
"Keep your boxer's on, gayboy." Another laughed.
I glared at them, my eyes blazing with hatred. One boy stepped closer, but he wasn't smiling.
"And your that kid that beat up my little brother today." He snarled.
I tilted my chin up to him. "He deserved it."
The boy's eyes glowed with anger. "You little shit!" And he struck me in the face with a full blow punch that knocked the cigarette out of my mouth and caused blood to cascade from my nose down my face. The impact knocked me sideways the boys took this time to drag me further back into the alley and begin laying into me with kicks and more punches. I screwed my eyes shut and felt pain all over, as I tried to shove them off and hit them back.
"Get off-" I tried to yell but my voice was cut short when one of them drew out a long knife and began leering at me, maliciously. The knife was coming closer and the others were still taking every oppertunity to cover me in agony.
Oh Fuck... This is bad.
