Blinding lights. That's the first thing I saw when we walked in. The prom king and queen nominees were to walk through the stairway entrance and then down the steps in a spotlight, with their dates. And now that I was Mikasa's date, that was something I couldn't get out of.

The whole hall was lights, I could see nothing. The only thing reassuring me that this wasn't a dream was Mikasa's hand holding tightly onto me. Either to reassure me or stop me from panicking and running away I'm not sure. Even though we were both blind, I almost felt relaxed like this. They could see me but I couldn't see them. I couldn't see their staring faces. Or the face of the one person I really didn't want to see but at the same time still felt feelings for who was almost definitely looking at me right now. Take a wild guess who.

But the safe concealment of the light didn't last. It shifted just slightly and the faces of everyone in the room were revealed. Staring.

I tried desperately to swallow the anxiety that was creeping up my throat. I felt my heart stiffen in my chest, my blood running thin like cold water. The weight of their stares.... crushing me. Instinctively, I looked for support from the one person who'd been with me since the beginning. I looked at Mikasa.

This close, I could see her blushing as everyone's eyes settled upon her and an audible gasp of admiration echoed throughout the room. I didn't blame them. She looked flawless. She wore her strapless Byzantium purple ball gown, tight silk around her chest and stomach, then breaking into a tulle bubble skirt at the waist, so long that it trailed behind her. In the light it shone every shade of purple and even shades of black from the the layer of chiffon. That's what she said it was called anyway.

"Prom Queen Nominee; Mikasa Ackerman, and her date Eren Jaeger." Mr Hannes announced into the microphone.

An applause arose from the hall and we both started walking down the steps, Mikasa walking confidently with me shambling awkwardly beside her. I couldn't help noticing the pause before Mr Hannes announced my name, as if he found it hard to believe that Mikasa would actually bring her brother as her prom date, being the most popular girl in the school. While I was the brat that always got into fights. I'm pretty sure that's how he saw me. Walking down the steps, I finally could look around and see how different the place looked. The theme this year was 'Colliding snowflakes' (being that this was a winter prom) so the entire hall was decorated with glittering snowflakes hanging from the ceiling, a mirror ball reflecting lights to imitate a blizzard, a forest of fake trees strung with thousands of mini lanterns, icicles gleaming every time the spotlights cast their glow over them and long stretches of hanging blue silk fluttering in the breeze caused by fans. The students were all either on the snow flake patterned dance floor or sitting in enormous, circular blue leather booths; sipping purple punch from over sized martini glasses. Even the giant speakers playing some remix of a Melanie Martinez song were white with painted snowflakes on the side. Huh. Who knew that shitty Sina high could pull off something this cool.

As the applause died down, and we stepped onto the polished dance floor, I heard voices yelling our names. Mikasa and I both turned to see Connie, Sasha, Annie, Reiner, Bertoldt and Ymir sitting at one of the booths. Mikasa smiled and started to walk over but I grabbed her hand.

"Reiner and Bertoldt are there. I can't sit there with them and act like it still doesn't fucking hurt that they stabbed me in the back. Or, more accurately; the stomach."

Mikasa's smile faded and she nodded slightly. "Okay, I understand. Why don't you go find Armin, I think he's working on the drinks stand."

"Sure." I turned to leave.

"Eren."

"Yeah?"

"Be back in five minutes."

I rolled my eyes. "I don't need babysitting."
