The sun was shining brightly on Emma's face as she sat by the lake. It was one of the last warm days of the year, and Damon had decided to make the most of it. The pair had gone to the spot once a week since Damon first showed it to her.

He was standing closer to the edge of the lake, skipping rocks on the smooth waters. The girl watched the boy's back move as flicked stones repeatedly. He always managed to have multiple ripples with each throw. The wind blew lightly on his face, pushing his hair back to expose the sharpness of his jaw.

Emma smiled as she watched him, remembering the first time she ever spoke to Damon Salvatore.

It was 3 years ago. She was 17 and it was the first time her over-protective father had let her go into town. As Thomas and Honoria Fell led their daughter through the streets of Mystic Falls, Emma followed closely behind.

It wasn't as if the other people of Mystic Falls had not seen Emma before. There had been several events and meetings held at the Fell house, most of which Emma attended.

The family continued their journey through town, stopping in stores and speaking to townsfolk as the ran into them.

"My dears, why don't both of you go into the general store and look around. Mr. Salvatore is just up ahead and we have some business to discuss," her father spoke. Emma craned her neck and saw Giussepe Salvatore speaking with his son Stefan about 20 paces ahead of them. Her mother softly grasped her hand and began to lead her into the store.

"Go find yourself something sweet to buy, just don't tell your father." Emma loved her mother more than anything in the world. She was soft spoken and kind, and always went out of her way to make sure Emma was happy.

They walked into the store together, separating only a few feet past the door. Honoria had begun to make her way towards a section of the store that contained ribbons and fabrics while Emma made her way to the section of baked goods. There were so many choices and Emma immediately found her self immersed.

"Emma Fell." A strangers voice cake from her left. She had a soft roll in her hand as she turned to face the person who called her name. She was met with Damon Salvatore. She had seen him at parties, standing stoically from the opposite end of the room. If her father had seen her standing next to him now, she feared the man would die. Her father had often expressed his distaste for the eldest Salvatore son. He stated that Damon was 'not nearly as well mannered as his younger brother. And was far to rebellious.'

"Damon Salvatore." She said his name in the same manner he spoke hers. She was unsure as to why he had approached her. They had never interacted in the past, and from what she could tell he did not seem interested in speaking to her.

"I have not yet had the pleasure of conversing with you. Of course, not without lack of trying. Your father has managed to always intervene my pursuits to speak with you." Damon held a smirk on his face. Emma looked down in an attempt to hide her blushing smile.

"That does not surprise me, my father is unfortunately not a fan of yours. In fact, it would be quite bad if he were to see us conversing. I fear he may never let me into town again." Emma laughed lightly as she joked, and Damon added a small hint of a smile to his smirk. He moved closer to her so that they were mere inches apart. He leaned down so that his mouth was near her ear. His warm breath cascaded down her neck.

"That just makes it twice as fun."

And with that he walked away.

"You're staring at me, sweetheart." Damons voice cut off Emma's thoughts, and she found her vision focusing solely on him. He had stopped skipping stones, and had turned to face her. He was backlit by the sun, so all she could see was his silhouette and the faint detail of his facial features.

"I guess I was. I'm sorry," she apologized. He walked towards at and sat down beside her. He smiled softly at her as he reached hi hand to cup her face. His hand felt so warm on her face.

"Don't ever apologize for staring at me, my dear." He leaned in closer to her so that their noses were gracing each other and their foreheads pressed together.

"I shall stare at you forever, then," she replied. She was looking into his eyes, they were so close to hers she was having trouble keeping them in focus. He did not respond to her, instead he leaned in slowly. Placing his lips to hers softly. She reciprocated the kiss, closing her eyes and smiling into the gesture.

It was short, like most of their previous kisses were. Emma never cared about how brief these moments were for them, she knew one day the would have all the time in the world.

"Emma, come here my dear! Your dress has arrived." Honoria called from the entry way of their house. Emma had been on her bed reading when she heard the voice. Gently closing her book, careful to mark where she was before exiting her room and shuffling down the stairs.

Her mother was waiting down at the bottom of the stairs holding a large box in one hand, utilizing her hip to carry the size of it. Her mother watched lovingly as she descended.

"I didn't know I would be getting a new dress," Emma spoke curiously.

"The Salvatore's are hosting a few guests and are throwing a party to introduce them to the town. I believe one of them is a girl close to you in age. I thought it would be nice for you to make a good first impression. It's about time you made a friend." Honoria brushed a hair out of her daughters face as she spoke.

"And what does father think of me going to the party?" Emma asked, afraid that he would disapprove.

"It took quite a lot of convincing on my part, but I managed to persuade him. Just as long as I keep a strong eye on you," her mother spoke confidently.

"Oh, so you will be by my side the entire time." Emma pouted slightly.

"Do not worry, my dear. If Damon were to come and steal you away I'm sure I would be none the wiser." Honoria held a strong smirk in the moment as her daughters face contorted in shock.

"W- I do not know what you mean," Emma stumbled.

"Do not be so surprised my dear. You may be able to keep your escapades hidden from your father but I am no fool. A mother always knows. But do not fret, what your father does not know cannot hurt him."

Emma quickly wrapped her mother in a tight hug, making the two trip backwards slightly.

"Thank you, mother."

"Of course, my sweet. Now come, let's get your ready for the party."
