Chapter Twenty
Bellamy:
The next morning, I wake up to shouts in the distance. I blink the sleep from my eyes, and take in my surroundings. My eyes fall on Clarke in a few seconds, and I remember that I stayed with her last night. Reluctantly, I let go of Clarke's hand and try to find out what's going on. I swing aside the drop ship tarp and step outside, and my eyes widen immediately. There's a great shape falling from the sky. I turn around quickly, and go back inside.
"You might want to see this, princess," I tell Clarke, scooping her up in my arms gently.
Her eyes flutter as she wakes up, but I am already moving. "What's wrong?" She asks.
I swallow, and turn my body so she can see as well. "Look up."
She turns her face to the sky, and her mouth widens suddenly. She looks at me, and I know we have the same thought.
"What is that?" Someone calls out from the crowd.
In the hazy morning, a few people are just coming out of their tents, rubbing their eyes and trying to find the source of the noise.
Monty's voice rings out above the quiet murmur of the crowd. "Did the ark send another drop ship?"
His idea sparks a fire in the group, and people start to talk at once, their voices mingling.
"Will they land close to us?"
"Why would they send another one?"
"I thought we would test if the earth was survivable or not?"
Clarke raises her voice above them, "That is the ark." At her statement, the crowd turns to face us. No one says anything about her position in my arms, but some of them raise their eyebrows. "And its coming down because its their only chance."
A boy pushes through the crowd then, elbowing his way so he can speak. "I thought we were their chance."
Raven replies to him quickly, "You would have been if their communication systems hadn't been fried."
The mass falls silent at her words, and we just stand there, watching as our old home continues its descent from space.
Clarke struggles to form words as the ark crashes into the ground, the smoke from its descent trailing in the air. "The ark was dying. They didn't have much time left for life support. That's the reason we were sent here."
The ark was dying? How long did she know this? Is that the reason she was locked up?
"To test the ground for them? I would rather they died!" Someone calls out from the crowd angrily, and voices rise up around us, chiming in their agreement.
"It might not matter anyways," I tell them, trying to appease them. I adjust my grip on Clarke, and continue to speak. "They sent us to die, and that's probably their fate."
"The ark would have broken, anyway, on it's way down," Raven says quietly. "Some stations would fly off and burn in the atmosphere. There wouldn't be any way to predict which ones."
I swallow at her words, and meet Clarke's eyes. Her eyes are glassy, and I know its not just because she has just woken up.
"All those people," she whispers to me, even though she doesn't need to. I can read her eyes, and in the same way, she can read mine.
I draw in a shaky breath, and hold her closer. Her arms slip up around my neck. Her fingers are cold on my skin, similar to the way I've always imagined a snowflake landing on me. I don't shiver at her touch. Her skin is cold, but her eyes are warm and deep. Even though they are filled with sorrow, her gaze warms me. I let that warmth fuel me.
She is accepting of me, even though I can sense a change in the dynamics of our relationship. We are the same. That's why it's hard, but easy at the same time. And still I feel like I will break her, especially after her injury. I'm almost too afraid to hold her in my arms. Should I let her go? It's a question I've been pondering for the last couple of days.
I got too close. I hurt her with my words, and then she came near death. If she had died, it would have been my fault. I love her. I do, but it is hard to love her when she seems so fragile. I don't want to break her. I don't want to hurt her.
That feeling scares me.
