Chapter Thirty-Nine
Clarke:
It turns out that Anya doesn't like unannounced trespassers.
When we found her camp, and tried to simply walk in, a few grounders had grabbed us.
I fumbled for Bellamy's hand, but my arm was pushed down. Didn't this just happen at the ark? Nevertheless, we struggle against their unwelcome arms.
"Let us go!" Bellamy tried to negotiate. "We're here with an offer."
"What offer?" The man's voice was gruff against my ear. I stop myself from flinching.
The camp around us backs away as we struggle.
"An alliance!" I say loudly.
"They're lying," someone says from the crowd. "There are probably archers in the trees right now."
"Is this true, Sky-Girl?" Again with the gruff voice. "Are there archers in the trees?"
This time, it's Bellamy who speaks. "If there were, don't you think you would be dead?" His voice is deep and powerful, and the grounders listen.
There's a pause--one of those long, dreary pauses that make you hear what you didn't before. I hear my heart.
Thumpthumpthump.
Thumpthump.
And then we hear her. "Stand down!"
Anya steps into the circle the crowd has made around us. The grounders loosen us, just a bit. But it's enough. I pull my arms out of their grip and step closer to Bellamy.
We stand like that for a while, eyeing each other. Her war paint doesn't scare me anymore. I wear my own war paint--the invisible kind.
"You want an alliance, Clarke?" Anya asks, looking down her nose at us.
"We do."
"And what would these terms be?"
This time, Bellamy speaks. "Both of our peoples are trapped in Mount Weather. We propose working together to get them out."
There's another one of those long pauses.
Anya raises her eyebrows. "Come with me."
Because we know we must do what she says, we follow her without question. Bellamy's hand finds mine and squeezes.
I'm with you.
