CHAPTER 5
Orientation went extremely well and I could not be more excited to start school. I was in such a good mood today. Maybe it was because the day I started med school was coming closer and closer, maybe it was because I finally made a friend in town.
My good mood didn't last forever as my thoughts drifted back to last night. Ashton betrayed his wife, even though they were separating, I knew once he sobered up he'd regret his decision.
My mind was in a million different places right now and with my nonexistent social life, I had absolutely nothing to take my mind back to reality.
Classes hadn't started yet, so there was no way to distract myself with work, and although I had recently made friends with Emma, I had no way of contacting her to make plans.
After a few hours of aimless TV surfing, I decided to call Ryan.
"Hey Delilah, what's up?" he answered cheerfully.
"Nothing, absolutely nothing," I replied with a tone that let him know I wasn't very happy with that.
"Do you wanna go somewhere?" he asked me with a chuckle.
"Yes," I answered. "If boredom could kill, I would be dead."
He laughed and said he'd pick me up in a little while before we both hung up. Buying a car was on my list of things to do.
I paced around my apartment impatiently waiting for Ryan to arrive. When I heard the honk of a horn down from the street, I ran out the door without even checking if it was Ryan.
"Hey," I greeted him while getting into the passenger seat of his beautiful black BMW. He was quite the spoiled one.
"Anywhere in mind?" He put the car in drive and pulled away without even waiting for my answer.
"Nope. I know I moved here three months ago, and this is very embarrassing to admit, but the only thing I have done yet is decorate my apartment and work. I don't know my way around this town aside from the bar, the grocery store, and one little street with tons of clothing stores. I have maybe two friends here, one of which is you, and I have to say, it's getting pretty lonely," I sighed.
"Sorry I'm not good enough for you," he joked. "I'll show you around and bring you to the next party at my frat house."
"Oh lovely," I said.
"Fine, don't come. You're missing out," he smirked, showing he knew something I didn't.
"What?" I asked, growing more and more nervous by the second.
"That sob story from the bar transferred to my school, thought it was a bit weird that he has a family and is in school... He's in a load of my classes this semester," he informed me. "And it is so obvious that you have a thing for him."
"I do not!" I exclaimed, making my denial look false. "I'm just a sucker for a good drama." I shrugged.
"Yeah, okay," he scoffed. He pulled over in the middle of nowhere.
"Where are we?" I asked.
"You'll see," he said.
"Is this where you take me into the woods and kill me? I see no sign of civilization anywhere within 5 miles at least," I questioned as I followed him out of the car.
"Something like that," he smiled as he began walking through the woods on a tiny little trail that isn't visible from the street.
We walked in silence, me walking closely behind Ryan, trying to follow the narrow path without walking into a branch or tripping on a root. We continued for a few minutes until the woods opened up and I was in awe. It was beautiful.
The dirt trail faded into a small area of sand which then continued into a small lake surrounded by the tall trees of the woods. Completely secluded, completely still, and completely quiet.
"What is this place?" I asked. Ryan led me onto the sand where we both sat down across from one another.
"One of the guys from the frat showed us this place. It's kind of creepy the way that we could be lost in here forever without anyone finding us, but its also beautiful in the same way," he said, looking out at the lake. "We come here a lot to smoke or just to do school work when the house is too chaotic, which is very often when you're living with nineteen other guys."
"This is so cool," I said, looking at the sky. Because of the formation of the trees, the sky was cut into a perfect circle. The sky was empty today and seemed much more blue than usual. It was a perfect day.
Ryan and I just sat admiring our surroundings and enjoying the silent company of each other until the sun began to set.
"I have to meet up with my parents tonight for dinner, so we better get going," he spoke up.
I nodded, stood up, and followed him back out of the secret getaway and got back inside the car.
