Middleton High. The place where dreams are crushed. The place where swirlies are on clearance. That's where I was headed. Middleton High was a swanky new school in London. It was a brand new opportunity and my dad insisted that I go. Luckily, my two best friends, Tracy and John, were going there as well.

Tracy was a math whiz and kept up with all the latest trends and gossip. John was an excellent athlete but also loved to write poetry. Our summer together had been the best. We went hiking, fishing, and just enjoying the outdoors. I hadn't been looking forward to going back to school, and especially after the incident with my mom. That summer too, my mom was tired because of working too late on her computer, when she worked at home. So when my mom went out to get our dry cleaning, she fell asleep and ran into another car killing her in an instant. I still hate to talk about it in the open.

That morning, I was walking to the school when John caught up with me.

"Hey Violet!" John called cheerfully, "Ready for a new year?"

"You bet." I answered glumly.

"What's the matter?" he asked me, "Don't you miss school?"

"Yeah, it's just I miss my mom taking me to school every morning."

"Well, I know what will cheer you up." said John playfully as he handed me a sheet of drawing paper.

On the piece of paper was a drawing of a rose. I smiled at the drawing, because during summer John took an art camp. Obviously, he had gotten from stick figure to Mona Lisa in one summer. John grinned at my reaction as I put the piece of paper in my backpack. John looked so cute in his ripped jeans and plaid hoodie. His hair was short and was a real hot red head with wild curls.

Just then, I felt a slight tap on my right shoulder. I looked behind me to see Tracy trying to get in the middle of John and me. Tracy smiled at John. Her blonde braids were swinging back and forth with each step she took, and her makeup was just a little over done.

"Make way for the beauty queen!" Tracy commanded jokingly.

John and I made a space in the middle and Tracy took it. We continued to walk as we talked of the new year.

"Think we'll get lucky with class schedules?" I asked my friends.

"Well, let's just think happy thoughts!" replied Tracy positively.

...

When we finally arrived at Middleton High, I was astonished by the appearance of the school. Its colors mainly consisted of white and grey. The stone was smoothly done. The craftsman ship was perfect. The inside was even more glamorous! The floor tiles were brightly polished. The office was spic and span. The whole school had the latest technology and equipment as well.

All students had to head to the front office to pick up their schedules. Unfortunately, the line was literally out the front door. Luckily, since we were new to the school, we got to skip the line and go to the front. The secretary handed each of us our schedules and we compared one another's in the office lobby.

"I have science first period. How about you guys?" I asked them.

"Nope, honors algebra. Sorry Violet." Tracy apologized.

"That's okay." I said, "How about you John?"
"I have history, but look." John pointed at my schedule, "We have third period algebra."

Tracy leaned over John's shoulder to confirm and then grinned.

"I have your fifth period English Violet, and we all have the same lunch."

Then we split up and headed to our first period class. My science class was on the second story of the school. Room 205 to be exact. When I walked in the classroom, I felt like I was in an evil scientist laboratory. Sure there were desks and a whiteboard, but other than that was a spitting image of a villain's lab. I sat up front wanting to make a good impression. I tried to fix my hair because some of the hairspray had already begun to fault. I also made sure that my navy lace dress had no wrinkles whatsoever.

...

"Good morning class, I'm Professor Fitz, but you can just call me Mr. Fitz." the teacher strode into the room wearing a toothy grin on his face, "Now before we begin, I'll be deciding your lab partners for this semester."

Mr. Fitz picked up a chart from his desk and put on his reading glasses. He truly did look like an evil scientist. His hair was gray and stood straight on end. Almost like when a cartoon sticks his finger in an electrical socket. He wore a bright white lab coat too, with neon yellow rubber gloves.

"Holly Jones, you are with Tommy Smith. Please move beside your partner when I call your pairs. Now let's see, Violet Kessler with Steven Wright."

Then, a huge smelly guy sat in the seat next to me. He gave me a glance and I smiled at him politely. He only gave me a death glare and got a black marker from his backpack.

Why him!? Why did it have to be him!? I quickly raised my hand.

"Yes miss..."
"Kessler. Violet Kessler." I corrected him.

"So what's the problem Violet?" Mr. Fitz asked.

"Is there any way I could change partners?" I asked.

"Sorry Violet. No can do. You're stuck with this guy for the semester."

I put my face in my hands. I looked over at Steven. This was the guy I was going to be stuck with for the semester. I finally realized what Steven was doing with the black marker. He was writing something on his knuckles.

WILL KILL

I gulped and slumped down in my chair. This was going to be a long school year, and this wasn't the worst of my problems. Something else was coming. It was far worse than Steven. It was something I never imagined would happen to me. It was worse than fear itself. It was coming for one purpose, and one purpose alone. It was coming for me.
