"May I?" Drake asked as he started to take off my coat.
Wow, what a gentleman.
"I'm Drake Wallace, and who do I have the pleasure of meeting?"
"I'm Violet Kessler." I giggled nervously, "So, how are you?"
"I'm doing tremendously. Thank you for asking mademoiselle." he answered regally.
"Wow, you sure are fancy. Can I ask you something?"
"Yes you may."
"Alright class let's begin our experiment." Mr. Fitz said.
Drake then looked at Mr. Fitz. Rage apparent in his eyes. Mr. Fitz saw Drake and quickly changed his mind.
"Actually, Drake and Violet, you have no work for the remainder of class. Please, go back to what you were doing." he said nervously.
Drake then looked at me smiling as if nothing had changed.
"Now, where were we?"
"What was that about?"
"He was probably just being generous." Drake answered, "Now what do you like to do for fun?"
"I love to draw and I write a little." I said.
"It just so happens that I enjoy drawing as well." he boasted taking out some of his works from his black folder.
He handed me five papers and they were all detailed and beautifully done, but they were all very unusual pictures. Two were of a lake gleaming in the moonlight. The other three, were rooms of some kind. One was a kitchen with very old styled furniture, the second was a bedroom with the most ugliest green bed sheets, the last was a odd room. It was dark, but it had red and orange in the background almost like flames. I stared at it for the longest time then looked up to see Drake frowning.
"What's this one of?" I asked.
Drake turned silent for a moment and then smiled once more.
"Never mind that one. How about we head to lunch?"
"But it's only first period." I said confused.
"Right, sorry." Drake apologized.
"It's fine, class will be over soon."
...
That day, through all my subjects my teachers let me just talk to Drake. When lunch time came, I sat with Tracy and John, because I had a new friend to introduce them to.
"Hey guys! This is my new friend Drake." I said cheerfully.
I looked at Drake and he smiled at my two friends.
"Good afternoon." Drake greeted.
Tracy stared at Drake up and down, but John was more welcoming.
"Hey, catch the game last night?" John asked shaking Drake's hand.
"I'm afraid I did not. I have no time for trivial matters such as sports." Drake answered snottily.
Drake and I sat down next to each other. I tried to have a conversation with each of my friends, but it didn't go as planned.
"So did you catch "Once Upon A Time" last night?" Tracy asked me.
"Yeah it was amazing." I answered.
"Hey remember the part when..."
"So, do you like to swim, Violet?" Drake interrupted.
"Sure I guess, but can you please wait for one second?" I asked politely.
"Certainly mademoiselle."
"All right, maybe next week Ruby can come and watch with us?"
Drake then cleared his throat and walked away from the table. I got up and went to him.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
"Your friends are just so...different from the rest." he admitted to me.
"They're not so bad when you get to know them more." I defended.
"Well, I am just not used to them yet." he explained, "I suppose I'll go now."
And with that he walked away.
...
"Girl, he's bad news!" Tracy screamed over the phone.
I sat on the couch ingaging myself in my phone conversation.
"He's just not used to you guys yet." I said, "Maybe you should get to know him."
"Fine, but if he's a jerk like he was at lunch today, I'm done."
"Thanks, Tracy. Bye."
"Bye."
Then, I hung up the phone. I slumped down on the couch, and stared up at the ceiling. Drake was very formal from everyone else. He never failed to come to school in a fresh black suit and bow tie. Drake was rather handsome though. Maybe he came here for a reason. What if I was the reason he came? But that would be ridiculous. He'd never even met me before he came to Middleton High. There was something strange about him, and I intended to find out what it was.
...
"Dad, what's the best way to get to know someone?" I asked my dad that night.
I leaned over his shoulder to see what he was making. Dad was cooking chili for dinner, and stirring the pot slowly.
"Well sweetie, it depends on what the person's personality is like." he answered.
"He's very fancy and formal and likes to draw." I replied.
Dad thought about Drake's traits for a bit, then he went to cut more peppers for the chili.
"Maybe...you could stay after school and draw with the person." he chuckled, "I guess you decided to take my advice about the new boy. What was his name? Derek or something?"
"It's Drake, and yes I suppose I did. I guess I could meet him after school on Tuesday, since I have nothing going on."
"It's fine with me sweetie, now can you please set the table for dinner?"
...
"After school, you say?"
"Yes, and I'll bring my art supplies if you like." I suggested.
"I'm so sorry mademoiselle, but me and your friend, John, are going to the lake that Tuesday to 'hang out'." Drake smiled apologetically, "Maybe if you are lucky, I shall take you to the lake one day."
"What's at the lake?" I asked.
"My home of course!" Drake grinned.
The classroom was unexpectedly silent. Class was about to start in a few minutes. Why wasn't anyone here? No one was here when we showed up here to talk, but we dismissed it because we were so early. Now I was getting worried. The bell for first period rang, and Mr. Fitz enetered the room and set down his things.
"Oh, it's just you two today, haven't you heard the news?"
I shook my head, as Drake stared at Mr. Fitz with his brow concentrated in thought.
"All the students, except four, have the flu." Mr. Fitz explained.
"That's awfully strange that pretty much the whole school would get sick over a weekend." I said, "How did they get it?"
Mr. Fitz gulped and stared out into space. He seemed to be speechless. Drake was furious and gritted his teeth in anger.
"Mr. Fitz is just saying that he doesn't know, Violet. The weather is chilly though, so that must be the reason, right Mr. Fitz?" Drake said in an irritated tone.
Mr. Fitz nodded his head and sat down at his desk. That day, was the last I saw of Mr. Fitz as my teacher.
