I awoke in my bed, staring into my father"s worried eyes. I quickly jumped up, feeling self aware, looking down at the jeans I fell asleep in. My dad was sitting on my bed, keeping his hazel eyes on my green ones. Not only did he seem worried, but angry.
"What is wrong with you? How many times have I told you not to fall asleep on the bus? Do you know what kind of people are out there? You could have been robbed. Or worse, raped! Maybe it was a bad idea letting you celebrate your birthday yesterday." My dad screamed at me. I flinched a little at his words.
"Dad," I whispered, not daring to meet his eyes. "I was slapped and blacked out." I said, feeling my still sore cheek. He gave me a funny look, and then looked at my cheek. His anger started to wash away.
"I see." He stated. He rubbed his chin, the thing he always did when he was thinking. " Who did this, did you get to see their face?" he asked gently, feeling the slapped are on my face.
"The man said that you know how mom died. He said that you need to tell me." I murmured, still looking any where but at his face. I saw my dad's body stiffen, and looked up to see his emotionless face. "Dad, didn"t you says she almost got ran over, and she just had enough energy for me to be born?" I waited for him to answer. He clenched his jaw, now staring at the floor.
"I was going to tell you when you get older. Even now, I don't think you are ready. I made mistakes, as a younger man, and now I will have to deal with it. I regret it. I loved Makenzy a lot. I never meant for it to end like this." He said, keeping his eyes on the floor.
"What really happened?" I asked, starting to get annoyed that I was lied to by my own dad. When he didn't answer I started to glare. " What happened to mom?" I said, louder. My temper was starting to boil. Back when I was in elementary school, I was made fun of for not having a mom. Everyone would point and laugh and say 'look, it's mom-less disaster'. I was called that because I wasn't able to dressed fashionably or put my hair the way a girl with a mom can. I would always tell them 'Well at least my mom died nobly so that I could be born' and they would then shut up and nod, knowing that it's true what I said. What if she died a suicide? What if she was trying to have an abortion so that I might die and she lived instead. I looked at my dad again. "Dad!" I nearly shouted. He looked up just as the door bell rang. He quickly jumped off my bed, avoiding my question completely and went to answer the door.
I sighed and quickly got dressed. I brushed my teeth and went down stairs to see a lady in the dining room, talking to my dad. They were whisperring, bending over in a way so that I couldn't hear. I walked into the room and immedeatly they stopped talking. I walked in to get my breakfast, and walked out, trying to get as far away from him as possible. As I was about to go out the door, my dad stopped me.
"Jordan, you forgot to say hi to our guest." My dad called. I turned around and nodded to the woman, before starting to leave the house again. "Now that's just rude. Please give her a proper greeting." I turned around, and walked back into the house, as slowly as possible. I looked up at the woman and gave her a fake smile.
"Hi miss, I am his daughter, and I really don't want to be here right now." I said, and put out my hand for her to shake. She looked at me funny, and shook my hand.
"My name's Marinda, and you'll be seeing me a lot more around here." Marinda said. I looked at her oddly, and walked out the door. I decided I need a breather, and so I walked to the diner.
