A/N: For plot reasons and authenticity, there will be brief profanity in this chapter. As someone once told me on this platform: "There is a difference between a Christian writer and a Christian who writes." Jesus is present in every message I tell, but like in the book of Esther (highly recommend you read it!) you must look for how He is working behind the scenes.
Thank you and have fun reading!

FRIDAY, MARCH 31stDear Diary,
After meeting with my mentor yesterday, we made plans to continue discussions for my project over lunch next Saturday. Luckily, that was when Alice would be studying for her midterm exam, so it wouldn't conflict with any of our personal matters as we'd both be busy anyway.
"Alright, Mr. Bosnik. Thanks for everything. I'll talk to you soon." I hang up the phone and slip it back into my jean pocket.
Time is ticking down as the date of my birthday gala draws closer. Just thinking about it makes my stomach coil.
It would be a nightmare of a night: suffocating amounts of perfume and the desperate women attached to them, fizzling cocktails that are too sweet for my taste, very important chairmen and women watching me crisply from every corner. And possibly, no, definitely an embarrassing public speech to the crowd to wrap up the night.
On top of that, there would be the marriage proposal from the Kang family. My parents have been pressuring me into marrying their daughter, Seong-Jae, for our own material gain.
Back when I still needed help to push my arms and legs into a suit, Seong-Jae had already been a slithering, crafty girl. Even though she behaved precariously, she knew how to turn her naturally glaring eyes round and innocent. With that power alone, she could lure any older gentlemen to make a deal with her father.
Not that her charms would be needed much— everyone knew that the Kang family was an extremely propertied conglomerate in Korea. Seong-Jae Kang could have any suitor she wanted. In fact, before my parents agreed to the alliance, there was a long line of CEOs, heirs, and even an Arabian prince ready to throw themselves at her feet.
She used to like bringing up the Arabian prince to her friends when we would see each other at parties. Knowing her, she was probably trying to make me jealous. Of course, when I kept ignoring her, she stopped talking about it.
I wouldn't be surprised if the marriage alliance was her idea, all the more as to why this had to be dealt with quickly.
And... I've decided to take Alice along. That woman is the only way I'll be able to stay as sane as possible before the night ends. I've never been able to keep it together on my birthday without drinking a few glasses of soju. But I've been trying to lay off on the alcohol for her sake.
