Leah's POV
I awoke to see early morning sunlight filtering in through the cracks in my blinds. 'This is it,' I thought to myself. 'Arrival Day is finally here.' I rolled out of bed and quickly made my bed.
I walked down the hallway and into the kitchen/ living room. My light blue tea kettle was calling my name. I grabbed it off of the counter and filled it with water, then stuck in in the microwave, because they don't let us have a stove in the apartments. I set the timer, then opened up the cabinet and grabbed a tea cup.
The microwave let out it's annoying beep, and I took the tea kettle out, pouring the water into my teacup with an elephant on it. I smiled.
My little sister had given me this tea cup as my going-away present, because she knew I have loved elephants ever since I was little and she couldn't resist it.
I carried my teacup down the hallway, past Zoe's room, past our bathroom, and past my room towards the French doors at the end. I opened them up and stepped out onto our small balcony.
The September air was warm but crisp, which is why I love being outside on summer mornings like this.
I sat and drank my tea and watched the sunrise.
If I stood on my tiptoes, I could see the top of Mt. Everest in Animal Kingdom. I sat there for a while, just thinking. I looked at the clock that was hung on the balcony railing: 7:30. Zoe would probably wake up soon, and the other girls might be arriving any minute.
I grabbed my empty tea cup and went inside. Walking down the hallway, I stopped at Zoe's door and knocked on it to wake her up. "Rise and shine sleeping beauty!!!" Zoe grumbled, and I laughed because I knew she wasn't a morning person like me.
The living room was still a mess from me and Zoe's movie marathon last night. Pizza boxes, plates, blankets, pillows, and empty candy bags lay in a mess all over the place. I hurriedly picked up the empty boxes and bags and plates and shoved them all in the trashcan, which was now overflowing. I grabbed up the blankets and folded them, putting them in the closet. I heard footsteps behind me, and turned around.
Zoe stood in the doorway between the hallway and the open living room/kitchen. Her ginger hair was ruffled up, and her blue eyes were squinted. She was wearing her blue and yellow duck printed pajamas and a blue tank top.
"Good morning! Come help me clean up this mess!"
Zoe started talking in her New Yorker voice. "Ughhhhh! Leah, not everyone is as peppy as you are in the morning!" She tried to act annoyed, but I could tell she wasn't.
"Girl!! Come on! We have to get this place cleaned up before the other girls get here. We can't have them thinking that they're going to have to live with a bunch of slobs! You finish cleaning up the kitchen, and I'll go clean up our rooms."
She didn't argue. I walked down the hallway toward her room.
Zoe's walls were navy blue, and her furniture was white. She had a white metal bed, which had a curving canopy going up from each corner of the headboard and footboard. A metal circle connected the four curved rods. She had a string of paper flowers hanging from the canopy. Her bedding was a navy blue and white, with a fuchsia flower accent pillow. She also had a white vanity and a chest of drawers, and crystal lamps with white and fuchsia shades. On the walls were framed pictures of her friends, family, pets, and New York, and a white wall decal. It said
" 'If you can dream it, you can do it' -Walt Disney" in scripted font. There was a fluffy white rug on the floor.
I picked up assorted pink and white pillows off the floor, and made her bed. I put all of her Vogue magazines in the bin next to the vanity.
