Report

Thrawn rubbed his forehead.

He has been working on this report for way too long, and he couldn’t seem to get anywhere with it. He kept making mistakes, confusing words in Basic, and he couldn’t focus as well as he usually could.

Something was just off with him.

“Sir, I just received a new report to fill, and I’d like to ask for your help with one thing,” he heard Eli Vanto say, as he walked past his table for at least the fifteenth time in the past few minutes. The young man was all energized, and Thrawn was really jealous of him at that very moment.

“Let me see,” he replied, and the next moment he saw the report pop up on the screen of his datapad.

He rubbed the bridge of his nose while holding back a yawn before opening the file, and he was unlucky enough that the other man saw the movement.

“Is there something wrong, sir? You seem to be exhausted.”

“Everything is fine, Ensign. Which part of the report do you need help with again?”

Vanto crossed his arms, and continued looking at Thrawn. He seemed unimpressed with the lie. “Quick change of topic.”

“I answered your question, Ensign Vanto, by saying everything was fine. You asked me to help fill the report, so that’s what I’m doing. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t see why any of these would be a problem.”

“That’s right, you answered my question. The only problem is that the answer was not true.”

Thrawn raised an eyebrow at him. Other officers wouldn't have let their aide speak in such a tone with them, but Thrawn and Vanto were different. They kept the strict formalities whenever it was necessary, but at these times, when they were alone in the office, just the two of them, they spoke a bit more commonly to each other.

“What do you mean exactly?” Thrawn questioned.

Vanto took a moment to decide if he really wanted to share his thoughts. ”With all due respect, Sir, you need to get some sleep. Being exhausted doesn't just affect your health but it could also affect the work you're giving out of your hands. You look like you haven't slept in days, so I suggest you put that datapad down, and get some rest.”

“I must finish this report, but how about I promise you that I will sleep after— What are you doing?”

Suddenly a hand had grabbed his datapad, and pulled it out of his hands with one decided move. Thrawn looked up to see Vanto staring at his screen, reading what was displayed on it.

“I will finish it for you.”

“And how do you plan to do that?” Thrawn asked, raising an eyebrow.

“I’ll figure,” Vanto shrugged. “You taught me well, Thrawn.”

Thrawn sighed. “I suppose I don’t have a choice.”

“That’s right, you don’t.” Vanto’s lips curled upward, giving a slight, almost unnoticeable smile.

Thrawn smiled back.

He didn’t know what he will do without Vanto…
