A/N - Alcohol usage/drunkenness in this chapter!
EVIE POV
The streets of Bucharest were silent beneath the saturated moon. Only the irregular clop of my heels against the uneven cobblestone could be heard echoing around the street. The fuzzing in my head dulled into sharp points, piercing my dreamlike state of staggering haphazardly back to my forgotten flat. The half-empty cold glass bottle in my hand sent icy chills up my blurred palms, whispering to me to satiate my upcoming sobriety with the unnamed golden whiskey.
My thoughts were scattered in useless heaps along the road, pickpocketing certain fragmented memories to play on repeat in my mind, as I lazily trailed my distressed fingers against the decaying buildings that lead down twisting alleys and up treacherous stairs to get to my reclusive flat.
I lifted the chilled bottle to my wet lips, swallowing the warm liquid hastily. It travelled down my throat leaving a familiar scratch that lifted the bitter notes up to my numb tongue. I Rolled my head back in welcome to the harsh taste I had come to love over the years.
The soft drone of a distant plane could be heard in the pitch-black sky. I lifted my head to the empty heavens in drunken hopes of silencing the irritating noise, but all my unfocused angry eyes could settle on was ebony clouds rolling in front of the fluorescent moon.
I sharply turned the corner, my ankles twisting painfully in my heels. A giggle escaped my icy mouth as the aching pain quickly became only a buzzing warmth spreading up my legs.
My face flushed despite the biting cold that nipped at my paper-thin uniform. I had stupidly decided on wearing a black skirt and white dress shirt without my signature leather jacket to work tonight, as it was nearing the end of the warm summer nights. I had planned on leaving the bar after the early shift had ended, but the drunken people with sloppy smiles encouraged me to celebrate my birthday for once.
It had been years since I had even paid attention to the day my birthday was on, but tonight felt different. I had turned 21, which meant I was a full-blown adult in every sense. I finally had the freedom of true independence, no sad looks from strangers when they realise my age and that I live by myself, and no restrictions. Even though the legal age in Romania is 18, It still feels nice to know that if I ever went back to America I wouldn't have to be treated like a child ever again.
A dazed smile stretched across my mouth, euphoric bliss melting my dark eyes into molten ecstasy. I had gotten halfway through the narrow path infringing two large buildings, towering over me and cutting off the natural moonlight spilling in across the roads. That's when my muffled ears heard the gentle whirr of an engine behind me. I deeply inhaled, oxygen punching my brain into some form of awareness, and I felt the crumbling wall beneath my palms.
I stretched up to my full height, knocking back the remnants of the tangy drink, and flinging the empty bottle haphazardly behind me in hopes of scaring the ominous figure which loomed in the shadows.
A sharp grunt could be heard somewhere behind me and I snorted at the absurdity of this evening, the danger not truly sinking in until it was too late.
My legs were like jelly, but my beating heart thumped reliably, if not a little quickly, in me. It released a wave of new buzzing warmth to wash over my body, but it felt like being dunked in an ice bath, dousing my brain in common sense.
I felt the air pressurize and knew this was my time to run, so I bolted dangerously up the darkening alley still with my heels miraculously intact.
I cast a quick glance behind me to see a body in the air fly over me and stop at the end of my path, cutting me off. I came to an abrupt stop, calculating the distance between us and slowly lifting my hands up in front of me. I glared at the looming figure, but the alcohol was still pulsing in my blood, so I had no idea if I was actually making eye contact with it, or if it was a plastic bag.
