You open your eyes snappingly quick, unsure of what awoke you. The sun peaks over the tree's leaves, casting everything into a bright yellow glow. James paces around in the light, occasionally stepping on a brittle twig, that's probably what woke you. To the right of you, AJ lays on the log, in a deep sleep. You can only hope that you can reach the school in time.
In situations like these, you wish Lee or Kenny was here. They'd know what to do, they always did. That's when another thought registers in you, did Lee and Kenny feel like this? Always worrying about you and Clem, always keeping an eye on you and the next walker?
You can't let Lee's death be in vain, nor can you sit against this log contemplating the next action to take.
You stand up slowly, so as not to make yourself dizzy and alert any nearby walkers just in case. Your body feels unsafe, defenseless even without your knife. "You're awake.." James says, stopping his pacing. His eyes rest on you, watching you reorganize yourself slowly.
"Yeah.. We need to keep moving." You reply, you walk over to AJ and examine him for a moment, your entire shaking with guilt. You reach under him and gracefully pick him up, your fingers scraping against the dark, sodden log.
AJ's heavier then before, maybe your exhaustion is catching up or maybe it's something having to do with him being unconscious. James seems to notice you struggling and eyes you with sympathy, "You need help?" He questions, you glance at him, and shake your head lightly. "No. Let's just move." You answer, James begins to walk through the woods, with you at his side.
James occasionally looks around, searching for walkers. Though there doesn't seem to be any in the area, he seems almost at ease as he walks.
"Do you think they're looking for you?" James inquires, his question was out of the blue as you walked in sullen silence.
"Clem and the others?" You reply,
He shakes his head, "That group, you seem to be close with that lady who shot at you. Do you think she actually wanted to kill you?" He asks,
You think for a moment, your eyes resting on AJ. "I.. I think she wanted me alive, but she didn't care if AJ was alive or not, but she did shoot at us, so who knows." You say, unsure of how exactly to answer that question.
"We'll see.." He says mysteriously. "We're approaching the school." He adds, glancing at you through his mask.
You sigh in relief, your shoulders sagging lightly. AJ's weight is beginning to become unbearable.
The gate becomes visible, and you keep moving, desperation out-weighing the exhaustion. A figure appears on the watch tower behind the gate, your vision blurs making the person unrecognizable.
"Walker!" Willy yells, something sharp and long appears out of your sight, it quickly closes in until you recognize it as an Arrow, it hits the ground at your feet, but that doesn't stop you from continuing. More voices come from behind the gate as it shoots open, its loud metal clanking over your footsteps.
Louis, Violet and Clem come running outside, all towards you. You look to your left just to catch James running off into the treeline. You fall to your knees, tears brimming in your eyes. You can barely hold AJ, you slowly place him onto the ground, your consciousness fading quickly.
Black dots begin to appear in your vision, and you close your eyes to blink again but this time, your eyes don't open..
Sorry for the long hiatus on this book but I hope you liked this return chapter!
