Earning Their Wings

I woke up the next morning and stretched. I felt a sharp pain in my back and yelped out. What was this? I rolled out of bed, literally, falling to the floor I curled into a ball and gritted my teeth. Hoping the pain would go away.

Finally after what seemed like hours it did. I slowly got up, placing my hand over my head to try and make the dizziness go away, and then made my way over to the door. It slid open and I fell through. I was caught and I looked up to see Chris. Gripping his arms I stood up straight.
"Hey." I said.
"You too?" He asked noticing my pained expression.
I simply nodded and he helped me to the lounge where Angel, Will, and Robin were. Angel was running her fingers through Will's hair to sooth him. Two bones were poking out of his back.
"What in the world?" I said.
Angel now looked even more like an angel. She had pure white wings that were outlined in a matalic gold.

She turned her head and smiled at me.
"I guess that note was literal hu?" She said jokingly.
"Guess so." I muttered.
Suddenly another wave of pain hit me like a tsunami. I yelled out and arched my back forward falling to the ground.
"Raven!" Robin and Chris both yelled at the same time.
I withered in pain on the ground. I could feel the skin on my back breaking and ripping as the bones pushed their way out of the skin. Then it stopped. I looked up at a concerned Robin. I felt something wet on my back.
"Did you pour water on me?" I asked him.
He gave me a small scared laugh.
"No silly." Robin replied.
"Then what's on my back? Why is it wet?" I asked.
I started to feel dizzy and light headed. Kinda like I did after a procedure. Robin's face was now serious.
"It's blood Raven." He said in monotone.
At that I blacked out.

I woke up in Robin's room. I groaned and rolled over.
"What happened? How long have I been out?" I asked.
"Two days." Robin said.
My vision started to clear and I could just make out the outline of him and the others. Finally I could see and the boys had black wings with their colored outlines and I was guessing girls would get white. Everyone but me had wings. Of course I was last. The pain in my back started again and I arched up to the ceiling and screamed out in pain. I could feel the bones in my back shifting and moving out farther.
"Don't fight it!" Chris yelled.
Don't fight it? But fighting it was all I could think about at the moment. My heart and pulse thundered in my ears. I could feel the warm blood start to trickle down my back.
"Make it stop!" I yelled.
"I'm sorry." Angel sobbed into Will's chest.
She had never seen me in this much pain. I bit my lip and stayed silent as the pain started to fade.
"Was it like this for you guys?" I asked panting.
Angel shook her head so did Will.

"Mine came quickly." Chris said.
"Same here." Robin added.
I groaned and took a deep breath.
"Why me?!" I half mumbled half shouted.
Sitting up, everyone rushed forward, trying to get me to lay back down again.
"Stay back!" I shouted and everyone cautiously backed away from me. "I have to move around or I'll be stuck to the bed with blood."
Finally I got to a standing position and Robin held my arm in case I fell. I jerked my arm away from him and walked out with confidence in my steps. As I entered the kitchen I looked around for food. I found some leftover food platters from yesterday, picked one up, and went over to the counter bar to eat. Sitting on the stool, I picked at my food.

Had I forgiven Robin yet? I'm not sure. It had been a while. I looked down at my stomach. The bruises had mostly disappeared. I guess it was time. The fuel that had my rage burning was just about out. Someone walked into the kitchen and I just ignored them until they came up behind me and messed my hair up.
"Hey!" I shouted irritated.
"Sup?" Chris said.
I rolled my eyes as he went to the fridge and took out a leftover platter. He came and sat down next to me and started eating. He quickly finished his food and started picking off of my plate. I swatted at his hand and he drew back sharply.
"What was that for?!" He asked me.
"My food." I said circling my arms around the plate protectively.
He laughed at my childishness and continued to pick of my plate. I kept trying to stop him before just pushing it to him. I wasn't hungry anyway. He ate the rest of my food while I just sat there deep in thought. When he finished he pecked me on the forehead and went to put the platters in the incinerator. I stood up and stretched. I turned to go back to my room. Robin was standing in the doorway and is smiled at him. But something was wrong. His fist were clenched and his hands were balled into fists. He looked angry, which made me confused. Why was he mad?
"Robin?" I asked.
He didn't reply, instead he turned on his heals and walked stiffly back to his quarters.

I groaned. Great. He was going to start that walking away thing again? I shook my head as I walked back to my room. What could I have done to set him off? To he honest, it could be a number of things. The fact that I'm being reckless with my health again, that I wouldn't rest, that I won't let him help me. He could be mad for any reason. I reached my door and it slid open for me. I went to sit on my bed but before I could the bones in my back shifted again and I let out a tiny yelp in pain, but then gritted my teeth to keep my screams in. I didn't want the others worried about me anymore.

I could feel the blood slide down my back. I was sweating and the salt stung the open wounds on my back. My door sold open again and Robin ran in.
"Raven?!" He yelled.
He ran over to me and held me so that open space was behind my back and he was in front of me. I was on his lap, my legs straddling his, I held onto his arms. My nails dug into his skin, drawing blood a little. He didn't seem to notice since he was trying to take care of me.
"Don't fight it. Just let it happen or you'll die in the process!" Robin told me.
"I'm NOT fighting it!" I spit out through gritted teeth.
The bones poking out of my back grew longer and stretched out. Of course with my luck I would be the last of the group to get my wings. The scientists made a plan for us all. I just wanted to know why I was so special! Tears streamed down my face as blood streamed down my back. Falling forward, Robin catches me.
"Raven!" He yells.
Finally my wings form. A beautiful white with blue tips to represent my element.

The blood finally stopped and I pass out from the loss. The last thing I remember is Robin touching my feathers and whispering,
"Beautiful."
