CHAPTER 15 TRUTH
I made arrangements for Kuchel's funeral an' re-furnished Levi's room. (He were the same clean, neat freak that Kuchel had been). I put him back in school an' had Bob an' Martha looked after him, when I weren' there. An' I spent my time between Mitras as Uri's body guard, an' in the Underground with Levi.
He were a smart kid, good at his studies, but not street –smart. I taught him the skills he'd need down there, an' 'bove ground too, if things didn' continue ta change. An' he were a quick study.
I didn' mean too, but I got damn proud o' that boy. By the time he were fourteen, he could pick-pocket, steal, bully, fight an' over-power any opponent ya put in front o' him. An' like me, it were then that he dropped outta school an' started workin'. But unlike me, he didn' start with a good job, a clean job; he jus' went straight inta the rackets. It were perfect, 'cept for the last time.
'Cause I'd gotten him so skilled. 'Cause I'd gotten him so' he could out-wit, out-racket, out- last, out-run an' out-fight anyone; I thought he were okay. I thought he were tough.
An' then I saw it.
He'd jus' beaten a guy twice his age an' three times his size, an' laid him on his ass. An' as he stood over him, he looked for me in the crowd that had gathered 'round him. Looked ta see if I'd seen. His tough, uncompromisin' expression turned ta hope, ta wantin' me ta be proud o' him. His eyes met mine, an' his expression turned ta love.
An' that's when I turned.
I could see his confusion, his sadness an' his hurt, as I turned my head.
An' I walked away.
Again, tears filled my eyes. Jas held me tight.
"Oh God Jas - he were my pride", I sobbed. "But you get it, right?! Don'tcha, Jas?!" I pleaded. "Ya see how I failed, don'tcha? That softness, it were still there, inside a him. An' it'll kill ya. I thought I'd gotten it outta him, by teachin' him how the world is. But it were still there, 'cause I WERE STILL THERE. There were no way ta get it out o' him, 'cept by me leavin'. You understand that, don'tcha Jas?" I pleaded with her, waitin' for the absolution that would take away the pain.
"I understand that you're a liar, Kenny Ackerman", she answered, though not harshly. "You love that boy, no matter how hard you try to justify or deny it. You LOVE him. And your whole life has been built on love. Love for your family, love for Kuchel, for Uri and for Levi. That has been your reason for doin' EVERYTHING. Without it, you fall apart! You collapse into a drunken, whoring mess! I know WHY you left him. And I know Levi was devestated. But it's KILLING you! You hurt not only Levi, you hurt yourself. You may not be parent material, but the reason you left was because you have no faith in yourself! Not because you have no faith in the world!"
"Owl, Owl, how CAN I believe? I know what I am. I know what I've done. I've seen too much. I've seen how unfair this world is. Maybe if I could see what you see, or know what Uri knows....Maybe?" I argued. "It's jus'.....it's jus' that.....Oh fuck it, Jas! Why the fuck is life so shit? I wanna go back... I wanna jus' go back.. I wanna jus' get him an' bring him up here! Maybe I should? Should I ? But then he'll never toughen up. An' if he doesn'......Oh God he's so like Kuchel... An' she's......"my words faded inta sobs, as she held me tight; lettin' out all the sadness, hurt anger an' confusion that I'd held in for so long.
I knew the chance for this may never come again, so I clung ta her an' held nothin' back, lettin' her arms warm me an' her love soothe me. Lettin' me jus' feel. I knew that unless I understood, unless I could see, I wouldn' change. An' I knew that I wouldn' go back. So's I held her close an' prayed the moment woudn' end.
But dawn would come soon, an' so would the mask; the façade, the ' Kenny the Ripper turned Kenny Ackerman- the King's body guard', who would do what he had ta do. An' keep on searchin'. But, for now, an' 'til then, I had her.
