The chaos that had been engulfing the kingdom appeared to have died down a little.
All our problems certainly hadn't disappeared and there were several other tasks to bring in order, however, the air around the palace didn't seem as strained or tensed anymore.
With Christian home and Dominic back on his feet, I was relieved of my duties as the brief acting ruler.
It did feel a little strange to turn back to my old errands, doing absolutely nothing.
I was of course glad that the kingdom was back in more capable hands, that of my oldest brother who despite Samuel's vain protests had not wasted a second in calling a council meeting as soon he was able to stand up from his bed.
I suppose it was good that he was setting everything back in order.
And yet I couldn't help but feel disappointed that my rule was over.
"Is there something bothering you, my lady?"
I momentarily turned to smile dismissively at Merida before going back to study the pretty flower blooming in my mother's beautiful and well-kept garden, the place I chose to hide as a child away from the pressures of royalty.
This was one of the few places which made me feel like I was Helen again.
"I'm doing perfectly fine Merida," I reassured her. "I'm just getting used to being idle once more I guess."
"Aren't you glad that the responsibilities are gone, your highness?" My Bodyguard questioned confused.
"Maybe but for some reason managing them felt right." I shrugged dully.
"You managed them well too."
I felt Merida subtly freeze as I straightened up before turning to meet the intruder.
I quickly motioned towards my personal guard as she drew her sword halfway.
"There's no need for that," I whispered in a low tone.
Strangely I hadn't been able to identify his presence even with my powers back.
I pursed my lips grimly.
Which only went to show just how powerful he might be.
"It's not polite to intrude on a private conversation sir Mertoff," I commented calmly.
Mertoff offered a simple smile, neither hostile nor friendly.
"Yes, I suppose it isn't." The massive demon responded equally relaxed. "And you have my apologies for it."
Even though his words may not have expressed much sincerity, oddly there was a shadow of curiosity and appreciation concealed in his eyes.
One that I did not quite understand.
Unusual as it was, the coldness that would always pierce me in the presence of a Pure blooded Noble, one that I was so used to appeared absent even with the largest demon among them all standing right in front of me.
Merida however still seemed wary as she stood close behind ready to draw out her sword at the slightest odds of danger.
"I only dropped by to pay respect to the princess who has been handling the kingdom so well in her brother's absence."
There it was.
I narrowed my eyes ever so slightly.
I had been expecting this and there was no meaning in denying his words either.
