KAYLA
"I thought you wanted to forget this?" Mya questions Kayla, who lays a Ouija board on the floor of her parent's bedroom.
"I changed my mind."
"Why?"
"Yeah...you told us this was too scary."
"I know...but I've been seeing things." Kayla admits, taking a seat on the floor. "Crazy things...not just in my sleep. I'm having visions."
"Visions??" Jia joins her on the floor, sitting beside her.
"You mean dreams?" Mya investigates. Her caramel skin is spotted with green glitter to match her costume.
"No...I saw visions outside sleep."
"Not possible."
"Mya, listen to her!" Jia scowls.
She huffs heavily. "How do you know these weren't dreams? Some of them can be vivid."
"Because I called my grandma this morning....she referred to it as a family legacy. She's flying out next week to help me.
Mya has no retort; this news silence her. It's obvious that she's freaked out by how she hugs her arms and glances at the bookcase. Even her posture changes...she hunches her shoulders.
Kayla finds this odd since she was the one who suggested using the board. "You were the one who said: if there is a presence in the book, we can call it."
"I did."
"So, what's the problem?"
"Nothing..." Mya hurries over to sit cross-legged next to Jia. She tries her best to collect her wits. "Let's just get this over with. We're supposed to be out trick or treating. Then off to see a movie."
"Which movie?" Jia attempts to have a normal conversation, but her jittery voice exposes her dread.
"I'm not sure yet."
"How about Never Cry Wolf?"
"That's not a horror one...it looks like a snooze fest. Eyes Of Fire seems like the best option. But it plays in 30 minutes...we're going to miss the showing."
"It'll be quick." Kay holds her hands out so each of her friends can take one. The trio lock hands in a circle, staring down at a rugged Ouija board. The oak wood is thicker than an inch. The bold letters gleam under the dim lighting of the room. Beyond the window is darkness. Kayla quickly goes to open it. As she returns, she grabs the first book on the shelf. She sits back down, flipping to the page that has the summoning incantations.
INITIATION SPELL - Enrus De Cov.
WATER SUMMANCE - Aqwav coum.
AIR SUMMANCE - Wina coum
EARTH SUMMANCE - Grroc Coum.
Her friends read the page. She spies them glance at one another. The two wonder if any of this is real. Who would put so much effort into a prank book? The detailing, the language, the descriptions. The dated binding. The thirteen-star symbol on the front cover. The thickness of the literature...there has to be hundreds of pages. And this is only one edition out of dozens.
"Which one did you say?" Jia asks in a wavering tone. She's petrified. Her tan skin has a hint of pale.
"The air summance."
"Not the initiation one?" Mya contemplates.
"No."
"How were you able to cast without initiating?"
