It is a very hot summer day in California just like it had been all week but today it seems like it was a lot hotter than normal. Maybe it was just my thinking since I'm so tired from the stake outs that Hutch and I have been on this past week. With lack of sleep, lack of food and being in a car for hours on end brings out the worst side of both of us. We don't take it personal, but we do laugh about it later on when we both are well rested. I closed my eyes for a moment before I got up to get some more coffee to help me stay awake. I need something that will help me get through all this paperwork so I can go home and get some rest. I sat back down to finish the last of the paperwork when the door of the squad room was opened.
"Starsky, there is someone here to see you." An officer called from the doorway.
"Can you please take a message? I'm kind of busy." I called back without looking up.
"Okay."
A few moments later the officer came back in as he handed me a paper. "Sir, the person won't leave, nor will they talk but they gave me this to give to you."
With a grunt, I took the paper as I opened it to read. What I read sent me into shock as I got up from my chair and marched out of the room. I turned to see a young girl standing at the front desk. She looked like she would be about 15 or 16, her hair was a goldish blond, about 5.4 to 5.6 in height, she wore a red dress that covered her whole body, and she was holding a bag as close to her as possible.
I walked over to her as I held out the paper and said, "Is this some kind of sick joke because if it is, I don't find it very funny."
She looked at me in surprise as she shook her head no. She then pointed to the paper in my hand and then at me. I just looked at her before I asked, "Can't you speak?" She didn't say anything but just looked at me.
"Well, this is not funny, and I think you need to leave." I told her as I turned around to walk back to the squad room. I sat back down at my desk, picked up my coffee and downed it.
"Everything okay, buddy?" I heard Hutch ask.
"Yea, just a joke that is not very funny." I replied as I finished my paperwork.
When we got done, I got up to walk out with Hutch when I saw that the young girl was sitting by the front of the station. I just shook my head as I got into my car before I drove home. I was just happy that tomorrow was my day off as I plan on sleeping the whole day. That is what I did most of the day. I felt refreshed as I walked into the station with a smile on my face.
"Starsky, get in my office right now," Dobey called from his office.
"Yeah, Captain," I said as I walked in.
"Will you please tell me what this is all about?" He asked as he handed me a piece of paper.
I took the paper and as I read it, I got madder. "I don't know Captain; I have no clue what this is about or even who she is. She came to the station the day before yesterday, gave me a paper as well but wouldn't talk to me when I questioned her." I told him as I looked up at him.
"Well, you better find out what she wants and who she is. She hasn't left the station in two days. She has also been without food or water for at least a day."
"She hasn't left. I'll get to the bottom of this right now. Where is she?"
"Minnie took her to the lunchroom to get some food."
"Thanks Cap, I'll get right on it." I said as I walked out of his office.
"Everything okay, Starsk?" Hutch asked as I walked past him.
