Like the new cover? I kept changing my mind on how the twins would be on it, but I think it's alright.

Just if you guys didn't know, I'm writing this before the portal opened as I didn't know that would happen until now. Well I did, but I didn't know it would happen so quickly.

Chapter Eight

The journal under my nose

Stanford's Pov:

I woke up to the screaming alarm, slamming my fist down onto it. Another day with out the kids around. Except there were new ones here, I remembered now, that they showed up on my door with gnomes attacking. I got up and headed downstairs. Charlotte and Louie must still be sleeping. The walls in the old shack weren't very thick, I could hear they were whispering in the night.

I opened the fridge to start cooking breakfast, I could smell something. It smelled of death and decay. I looked to my right. It was a dead possum.

"Gross! Why is there a dead possum in here?!" I yelled, covering my nose and mouth. I closed the fridge and found some gloves for working outside to get rid of it. Picking it up by the tail, I chucked it outside into the trash can. "Seriously why was there a dead possum in the kitchen?" I mumbled as I walked back into the house. Throwing the gloves on the table, I heard the two kids walking down the stairs, slowly and as if stumbling with tiredness.

"Morning." I said, not turning towards them. I opened the fridge, getting out milk and butter for the pancake mix.

"Ey, you kids like pancakes?" I asked, finally looking at them. The two nodded, Louie smiling. Charlotte seemed to fall asleep at the table, jolting awake every few seconds.

I found a half a box of mix and started mixing the ingredients together.

"Umm... Thanks for letting us stay here Mr. Stan." The boy said.

"Err.. It was nothing, I mean I couldn't leave you guys wandering around. There's obvious things that are out there, especially in the woods. Speaking of the woods, what were you doing there?" I asked

Charlotte seemed to keep her eyes open enough to answer my question. "We- *yawn* were trying to cut across a town by going through the woods, it seemed quicker, Ya know *yawns* at the time."

You seem really tired, didn't sleep well?" I asked as I poured some pancake mix in the pan. I of course knew why, they were doing something, but what?

"We found a book with a number on it that talked about-" Louie was about to finish when Charlotte smack her hand on his mouth.

"A book with a number?! What number?" I said, urging for an answer. Charlotte glared at Louis. Louis ignored her and answered " it was a journal with a golden hand with six fingers and a big two on it, why?" Charlotte did a face palm, Louis just looked for an answer. I dropped the batter.

"What? The journal? It's here? Where?!" I demanded, scaring the boy with my insanity.

"It's upstairs under the bed." Charlotte moaned, she obviously didn't want me to know about it.

I ran up the stairs like I was a child again, except it wasn't like toys I was after, it was something more important. The two kids called up the stairs. "What are you doing?" They asked. I ran into the bedroom, falling to the ground to look under dipper's bed. Nothing. I looked under Mabel's, the gold and torn book was sitting there. I pulled it out for. Under there.

"Finally, after thirty years, I found you again, now one more." I murmured. It was a book dipper had, I was gonna take it, but I never got to. Dipper always kept it hidden from view, always in his vest. I took the book down stairs and put it on the table. The kids stared at it, their eyes shined in the gold paint. I headed towards the stove to turn it off, when the batter still on the floor, tripped me.

"Woah!" I fell. Louis chuckled, Charlotte just kept starring into the book. I grabbed the table for support and pulled myself up. I narrowed my eyes at the laugh child, yet inside I grinned. Then frowned. I was glad I found another journal, yet sad, because I knew the twins weren't safe, and because I was working on the portal, I never knew they slipped through the house and away, not leaving much of a trace.

Sighing, I grabbed a box of Cornflakes Without Frosting and three bowls and spoons, plopping them onto the table. The rag on one of the drawers handle was now in hand as i cleaned up the mess on the floor. Once that was done I got the milk, it had a picture of you know who on it. Biting back old tears, I put it too on the table.

We sat silently as we all ate the stale cereal and bland milk. Charlotte still stared at the book, even as she scooped cereal to eat.

"Hey," I snapped my fingers, "you alive kid? You seem like a brain dead zombie." Charlotte finally responded

"Huh!? What? Oh, still alive." She murmured. I looked at the book, I figured they were gonna be leaving this place soon, so maybe it wouldn't hurt to tell them about the journals.

"You kids wanna know something bout these books?" I asked. Louis and Charlotte bolted up at the thought of the knowledge.

"Well, about thirty years ago, a scientist named Stan Pines worked and explored the mysteries of Gravity Falls." I said.

"You were a scientist? Really?" Said Charlotte unimpressed.

"What? Me? No, sorry wrong Stan. Stanley Pines, my brother. I'm Stanford by the way, yet people still call me Stan. Anyway, he and another man, Fiddleford Hadron. Both worked on a project to big, it would cause severe problems to the universe if mistakes were made. That's what happened, and Fiddleford left the project and I hear he's crazy now. My brother continued on, yet ended trapped by this machine, it pulled him to somewhere I've been trying to find so he could comeback for thirty years. This machine, was the universe dimensional portal." I said. The boy stood mouth wide open, and Charlotte looked unimpressed, yet did seem to be surprised.

"This Journal, is one of three books that when they come together, can take over the universe. I only need them to get him back and nothing more, once it's done, I plan to destroy the journals, it's secrets hidden away where no one can get them."

Charlotte, looked at me instead of looking at me annoyed. She looked at me without a sarcastic remark, just stared. Louis had looked from me to the book, then said something I didn't expect.

"So, you need some help finding the books? We discovered some things last night, something I think you'll wanna know." He smiled. Before I could answer his question, he was running with the book back upstairs. Charlotte after him. Hesitating, I went up the stairs with them. What had they found? I thought. You don't what them to stay, they'll be in danger. But the journals, the secrets... Stanley.

They were siting on dipper's bed, Charlotte trying to light the lantern. I finally went over to light it.

"What did you find?" I said while fiddling with the hinge that kept the flame inside.

"The book has invisible ink, one with lemon juice, it appears when the ink is heated up." Explained Charlotte.

"Lemon juice? I've heard of the one with black light, but not lemon juice." I said. I opened the drawer of the bed side table, finding the box of matches. I gave it a small shake, it had only two matches left. Taking on out, I lit it easily, lighting the old metal cage for the light.

Louis took the book and put it right next to the lantern. We all stood around the book and small flame, it's light glowing on the yellowed paper.

What was on the book proved me wrong of the two children being a nuisance.
