Chapter 20. A chimchar off the old block

How many Pokémon did Ash catch in the Johto region. Read this question carefully. I'm not asking how many Johto Pokémon he has but how much did he catch in the Johto region?
Ash caught a total of 7 Pokémon in Johto

As Ash and Serena get closer to Cyllage city they arrive at a Battle Chateau. There they meet the owner Lord Turner. As they learn about the Battle Chateau, Lord Turner explains the ranks to all newcomers. Ash is psyched about getting some last minute battles in before they arrived to Cyllage city and signs up. After signing up Ash and Serena realize that a familiar face has also signed up for the Battle chateau.

Jayson: Sp we meet again. If I remember correctly you're Ash and she's Serena.

Ash: it's Jayson.

Serena: what are you doing here?

Jayson: isn't it obvious? I'm participating but my reason is not because I want to rank up but it's because I saw Ash sign up. Back when we first met I didn't get a chance to battle him but there's a chance that we can battle this time around.

Serena: how are you so sure that you'd make it to the final battle?

Jayson: I never doubt myself. Even if it's possible that I won't win I still always believe in myself and how strong my Pokémon are.

Ash: *smiles* well that's great that you believe in your Pokémon. No doubt shout it that's how the both of you will become stronger.

Jayson: I guess so.. Speaking of becoming stronger how is Pancham? Has it won any battles since you got it Serena?

Serena: well uh.. I'm not really a trainer that battles so we haven't battled against anyone since our battle with you.

Jayson: So it's still weak huh? Bummer

Ash: hey quit it, Pancham isn't weak.

Jayson: but it's never won a battle. In fact how can it become stronger if it's never battling? I'd suggest you signing up. Maybe if you can give it, it's first ever win it can feed off of that and become a stronger Pokémon.

Ash: that's not the kind of person Serena is. She believes in her Pokémon without battling. She already knows they're strong. She has her own way for bringing out their potential. Watch this. *Spewpa I choose you!!

Spewpa: Spewpa!!  *Spewpa jumps on Ash's shoulder and rubs against his face before jumping into Serena's arms.

Ash: You see that? I caught this Spewpa and although it's not Serena's, it always goes to her or help her when she needs help. It's the only Pokémon that I've caught here so far that doesn't battle. And even though it prefers not to battle it will do whatever to make sure Serena's alright. It believes in her, and so does all of her Pokémon.

Jayson: Hmm. I appreciate the information but that doesn't matter. A Pokémon will always love the trainers around it even if it's abandoned. It takes a whole lot of pain for that Pokémon to not care. I don't know exactly what Serena may have done to get its respect but it's completely normal for Pokémon to act that way. Anyway I'll see you in the final battle. There's no way either of us will lose until it's down to one of us.

Jayson walks off and leaves a very angry Serena standing next Ash.

Ash: Don't worry about him Serena. I'm going to make it to the final battle and win.

Serena: *nods* I'm sure you will, good luck

Ash: thanks.

Lord Turner: Attention, all of the trainers participating in the Baron rank match up, you may now make your way to the battle field.
