It was the middle of class when the phone rang. Everyone looked at me with shocked faces. I knew I was meant to put my phone on silent but I didn't. The teacher walked up to me and glared into my eyes. I smiled awkwardly. He put his hand out and I placed my phone in them. He walked back to the front of the class. Mac ran up to me after class.
"Oi" he said, trying to catch my attention.
"why'd you not have your phone on silent?"
"I forgot" I mumbled seeing if the caller had left a message.
It was the end of the day. Mac and I headed back to our dorms. I had found a voice message left behind. I placed it on speaker and in an eerie male voice I heard something terrible.
"Come to eight seven nine Duncan road if you want to see your little 'October' alive and well." The message ended and Mac stared at me like I was crazy.
"You know in movies if the bad guy tells you to come it means you'll most likely die".
I instantly started throwing clothes into my backpack. I told Mac to fill in for me and I left. I was speeding through the streets listening to google maps. What had happened to October? Was she alive? Was the killer telling the truth? I called back the unknown number and a female answered.
"Hi Robert, are you worried about little October?"
"Myra" I responded
"it was you" I was honestly not that surprised...
"Yep. It was fun actually, seeing your dad die like that." I must have been blazing with fury.
"Let me talk to October. Now". I demanded, struggling to keep my cool.
"Okay, okay" Myra said. What came out of October's mouth made my heart sink.
"R... Robert'' she almost sounded dead. I went rigid in the driver's seat of my car. Resisting the urge to break my beautiful Toyota hilux
"I'm coming. okay?" I whispered. Myra hung up. I had been driving for a couple hours when I finally entered Te Awamutu. My heart stopped when I arrived at the address. Was it too late? I stepped in the door of an old warehouse freezer room. I shivered instantly. I looked around the pitch black room. I felt the wall for the light switch. The light flickered. And in the middle of the room I saw a half-frozen October. Her once soft lips now dehydrated and chapped. I ran to her and regretted it. I felt a painful stab in my leg as Myra threw a knife.
I groaned in pain as I stumbled around. Once I regained my balance I felt October's pulse. Her skin was ice cold and her pulse was slow.
"I'm so sorry" I whispered in her ear.
"Alright. Enough lovey dovey stuff" Myra said as she drastically turned down the temperature. Myra walked towards me with a knife in her hand, a smirk visible on her face. I stood up and looked around. All that was here was a few boxes containing cans of something. I grabbed a can and I threw it. It hit Myra in the chest, she hollered in pain. Then she threw her knife.
It aimed straight for my chest. I gasped as I knew I would die. After it hit me I opened my eyes. I was alive. Myra looked at me furiously. I wasn't dead. I'm alive! I looked down at where the knife hung instead the blade hit something covering my heart. I pulled it out of my shirt. It had hit Tristion's phone. I held the knife trembling in my hand. I drew it back and shut my eyes as I released it from my hand. I heard Myra collapse onto the ground with a knife through her thigh. She couldn't walk. That also reminded me of my leg injury. Do you believe in karma? I wanted to ask. But she let out a huge, inhuman roar. She has the knife, it's still not safe.
My backwards instincts led me straight towards her, she tried to yank out the knife but I got to her first and held her hands to the concrete of the warehouse.
She spat in my face.
"YOU TOOK HER FROM ME BASTARD!", she yelled and squirmed in my hold
"You tried to take her away from me", she held my gaze and tried to kick my stomach. But I stared deep into her eyes and in there I saw the sad little girl with no friends.I almost took pity on her until she had managed to wrench the knife free from her leg. She thrust it into my gut. I winced and gasped as I slumped onto her. She pushed me off and tore the knife out. I lay there gazing at the ceiling vision blurring. I remembered October was still freezing in the chair. Myra had fled the scene and left us. I groaned and rolled over. I looked around for a phone. There it was. October's phone. Sitting half a metre away from me.
I crawled on my stomach a blood trail following. I reached her phone and turned it on. It was two percent. I hurriedly dialled one one one. It started ringing and a lady answered. "One one one what's your emergency."
"Help please" I mumbled just as the phone shut down. No battery left. I managed to crawl to october and untie her. She was unconscious. I found her jacket and wrapped her in it. Minutes later a police car and an ambulance arrived. They sedated me and just as I blacked out I saw the paramedics shock October's heart.
I woke up in a hospital bed. Beside me in another bed I saw October. Her skin was ghostly pale. I glanced down at my gut. It had been bandaged up tight. I took a deep breath and winced in pain. In the corner of my eye I saw October's eyes flicking, then she opened them. She saw me and touched my hand. "You came for me," she whispered.
"But I thought I was the reason you left."
"What... no... never" I was shocked. She looked at me happily. And I smiled back.
Rawiri came into the room.
"oh my god October" he leapt forward and hugged her. Then he looked at me.
"Thank you for saving her". I nodded knowing I risked my life to save her. October and I shifted our food. Hospital food sucked. Instead Rawiri brought us some pizza. I wiped some pizza sauce off October's crystal face. She smiled at me
"thanks" she said. All these wires get in the way.
A week later we headed back to Matamata. I loved going home. I had to live with October because I sold my house to go to college. Mac kept calling to see if I would come back. I answered with a polite no. Myra was caught, charged and sentenced to life in prison. My bandages were taken off to reveal a large scar on my stomach. The blade had stabbed me but hadn't damaged any internal organs. As for October she had very bad hypothermia but would recover with injections every day.
October and I were walking along the road where Tristion died. October started to tear up a bit. I hugged her and she stopped. We walked past our old school. We arrived at our destination, the park where we met. I sat down on a park bench and October joined me. We talked about Myra and Tristion. We watched the sun go down and the moon come up.
"Look, October after our near death experiences it made me think about the future and..." before I could answer she leaned in and took a big whiff. I froze in my spot as she did too.
"Umm... ok?", she blushed from her collarbone to forehead.
"Umm... y-you smell good...", she trailed off and breathed in my scent again. "....really..really good", my heart beat twice as fast as before; her eyes half closed and face flustered. What's happening? I asked myself. Automatically leaning forward with her. I'M OUT OF CONTROL! She'll definitely hate me after this.. Without another thought. Holding both sides of her mesmerizing face. I closed the gap.
I really wish I didn't need to breathe. I could kiss this girl forever. As us both pulled away, she smiled, a warm smile that I haven't seen in years.
There's my October. I thought.
She turned away blushing and stood across from Tristions grave. Dropping a bouquet of lilac flowers for him.
"Bye my friend".
