Today is pretty darn important for me. Why, you ask? I'm introducing Kacey to my family. I'm actually really excited. I'm on my way to pick her up, meeting her at some motorway service station.
Now I'm parked up, I see Kacey's family car parked up so I message her to let her know that I'm here. She tells me she's waiting in the cafe inside. When I get to where she is sitting, she is alone. She tells me her parents are at the counter so if I want to get a drink or something then go over to them. I quickly kiss her and jog over to the parents. Her mum sees me first."Hi guys! Kacey sent me over."
They ask if I would like anything ordering so I just ask for a drink and a snack. I hastily glance to see what I can get to eat. Maybe I'll get something for both me and Kacey to have. Her parents suggest some things that she likes. I offer some money but they refuse and tell me to go back to Kacey.
"It's good to see you honey, so how are you feeling today?"
I ask her. I reach for her hand and hold it on my leg. We enjoy a bit of time with her parents before we all part ways. We tell them we will see them tomorrow.
There's not a great deal of traffic going to my parents house. Kacey tells me she's feeling more nervous now as we're getting closer.
"It's okay baby, I'm positive they'll love you. Especially Haylie. I think you'll fit right in!"
Once we're parked in my parents drive, I ask her if she wants me to get her wheelchair out. Unsure, I get it out anyway. There's enough room to put it. We're greeted by Haylie first.
"Hey big brother!!"
"Hey Haylie! Look at you, are you getting taller? And this is Kacey, Haylie."
Haylie hugs Kacey and conversation starts up fast between them two. I knew they'd hit it off. Then we're met by the rest of the family, the parents, my brother and my other sister. Although Kacey is happily chatting along, I can tell she's feeling a little shy so I try to initiate conversations to help her feel more comfortable. She did tell me she gets shy and anxious around new people, especially when she wants to make a good first impression.
"What do you like to do, Kacey?"
Asks my mum.
"I like to make videos, read, write, going to shows and spending time with my family and friends."
Then my brother chimes into the conversation.
"So I hear you like football?"
Kacey laughs which makes my brother quirk his eyebrow up, curiously.
"I do. That's how I met Jacob. His team were playing against my team. I told him I felt like a traitor meeting him."
