Chapter 11

We Saw The Warnings But We Just Passed Them By

“Thank you so much for the delightful breakfast. Your company has been most entertaining,” said Philipp to Violet and her mother.

“No thank you for graciously allowing me to tag along,” said Violets mum as she flattered her eyes at Philipp.

“And thank you both for encouraging me to lose my breakfast,” said a sullen Violet.

Philipp had spent the last two hours charming her mother. He had a knack for drawing information out of people but she hadn’t really heard him talk about himself. She knew he had a degree in politics and had spent some time in the army but besides that he wasn’t very forthcoming with information about himself.

“Alas, I must leave you two beautiful ladies company and attend to some errands and business. It’s been a pleasure. I hope we can do this again sometime,” he said as he paid the bill, kissed her mothers hand and gave her a modest kiss on the cheek.

“I’ll call you later, Violet,” and just like that he was gone.

This had to stop. She thought in her head. Yesterday was the first time they had ever left together. One of them always had to watch the others retreating back. Her heart cracked a little. She was sure his business in South Africa would end soon and she would have to watch him leave forever. Would she be prepared to go with him if he asked? Not that he would.

She frowned.

“Violet stop frowning, you look better when you smile,” her mother said.

Violet chewed the inside of her lap as she and her mother walked towards her car. Violet got into the drivers side and caught a whiff of Philipp’s cologne. She looked over to the passenger side and watched her mum get in. Violets mother, Vanessa, was a petite and dark-skinned woman. She didn’t look like she had aged a day over 32. No wonder her dad was still in love.

“Mum, how did you know that dad was the one?”

A Wistful smile played on her mothers lips.

“I didn’t baby girl. All I know is that he loves me deeply and I love him. You and him make up the fabric of my life. I can’t imagine not having him. I guess that might be it. You never know whether someone is the one but if you cannot imagine a day without them then it’s pretty safe to bet that they could your one,”

Violet pondered for a while.

“Was it love at first sight mum?”

“It was something! I don’t know about love. When his eyes landed on me I felt a small glow. I had been checked out before but this felt different. I could feel my blood singing- like at any moment if it could, it would jump out of skin and wrap itself around him,” she said and continued,

“But that sounds melodramatic. Love is a confusing thing. It has its highs and lows but only you can decide whether it’s worth sticking up for or not”.

“You know, I quite like this boyfriend of yours,” Vanessa said.

“I don’t know whether he can really be considered a boyfriend mum. He’ll be leaving soon,” Violet said, as she manoeuvred the traffic back to her apartment.

“I know, but don’t let that stop you from having your fun,” Vanessa said, patting her daughter knee.

“He looks very familiar. I feel like I’ve seen him somewhere before I’m just not sure where?”

“I thought so too the first time I saw him. Maybe he’s just one of those man with a familiar face?” Violet said.

“Anyway- the reason I actually came to visit was to tell you about this surprise party I’m throwing for your dad and I need your help…” and just like that the conversation was over. And violet couldn’t have been more grateful.

Many hours of shopping later and Violet was exhausted. She had managed to slip away from her mother long enough to get the morning after pill. She drank the pill and wandered into her room. She changed into her ugly but comfy pajamas and went to sit in front of the tv.

*BEEP BEEP*

“Hey Vye, sorry I didn’t get back to you sooner.

Last night got a little bit crazy.

Can I give you a call?

Wes”.

With a guilty flush, she realised she hadn’t had a single thought of him all day.

“Hey Wes, It’s all good.

Can’t really talk on the phone right now.

Can we just text?”

SEND.

Violet didn’t particularly enjoy talking on the phone and she didn’t feel up to talking to Wesley right now any way. God would forgive her for this tiny white lie she was sure.

1min later

*BEEP BEEP*

“Yeah… So last night was awkward.

You were kind of into me and then not.

When you left then sent me that msg I was

Bummed”

She chewed her lip. She had given him mixed signals.

“I’m so sorry babe. It’s just so cozy with you.

I keep wondering what it wld b like

If we got back together.”

SEND.

1min later

*BEEP BEEP*

“I slept with the blonde from last night.

I didn’t mean for it to happen.

I’m sorry. I do want to be together”

She looked at her phone and expected to feel anger or disappointment but she didn’t. She had an odd sense of relief. He hadn’t been pining for her whilst she was in the arms of a man. She grinned. At least one of her dilemmas was resolved.

“It’s cool. We actually CAN’T be together.

But not because of the blonde. She is very

Cute btw ;). We just aren’t right for each other

Any more.”

SEND

At least blondie had gotten with someone who wasn’t her Philipp. She hugged herself happily.

5mins later

“Still would like to c u before
