Chapter 2

Friends, Who needs Them

It had been a horrible week for Violet. Her boss had been more irrational and demanding than usual. As the most recent and newest asset and acquisition to the Monitor firm, she was expected to work hard and for long hours.

Compiling the audit report for the Allan See law firm had been awful and at each turn there seemed to be a hiccup.

"Violet, I think it's time you re-think your profession. I don't think you're cut out for this job."

Violet puffed indignantly.

"Sir, can you please explain to me why you've come to this conclusion? Before this particular incident I had a stellar record. I think it's unfair for you to make a personal comment based on a single incident, unless you can name a few more?"

Her eyebrows were at a haughty curve, her hands on her hips as she waited for her boss's response.

He mumbled a sentence incoherently before ending the conversation with,

"I don't have the time to talk to you now little girl. You may leave now".

It took all of violet's willpower not to throw something at his head. But she smiled as graciously as she could and stopped herself from curtsying in a satirical fashion and walked out.

She mumbled under her breath as she made her way to her desk, pushing the golden popcorn curls of her braids out of her face and securing them behind her delicate ears.

She was a petite girl, standing no more than 5 feet two inches. Heels were a necessity. Apparently, no one took short people too seriously these days, a fact that always filled her with chagrin.

Her little corner in the office included a desk, a chair and a computer. The surface could barely be seen under the copious amount of hand written notes, reminders and to-do's.

She slumped into her swivelling chair and dropped her head back, needing a breather from the day. Not long after, her phone began to shrill insistently beside her.

She was contemplating not answering the phone when an irate workmate shot her a withering look.

"Violet Chambers of Monitor firm speaking, how can I help you?"

"Hey Vye! What are you doing tonight?"

Violet groaned softly recognising the voice of her best friend Eve.

"Go away Eve. I'm sleeping in tonight." Violet swivelled in her chair as she stared at her red kitten heels admiring how sexy they looked on her feet.

'C'mon Vye. It's freaking Friday. Last weekend you were missing in action too. I'm starting to think you don't love me anymore," Eve said.

Violet began to tap her foot.

"Oh hell no Eve. I refuse to be guilted. I'm in sleep debt as it is. A night out with you would make me insolvent"

Eve chuckled on the other line at Violet.

"No. But for real now. I miss you. You know you're my person. Please come out tonight?"

Before Violet could answer, Eve was already signing off.

"Great! Pick you up tonight round nine, material on dresses is optional. Bye!" and just like that she was gone.

Violet looked resignedly at the phone's beeping receiver and put it down.

She lay out in her chair once more and closed her eyes, envisioning the end of the day tomorrow.

"Violet! Come in here!" Her boss called for her none to gently.

AS she stood up to walk back to his office, she adjusted her black blazer, taking care with the navy blue cashmere sweater beneath it. She dusted off invisible specks of dust off her black skinny jeans.

"It never rains does it?" she mumbled disgruntled.
