I tried to peek around Eren as he answered the door, with no luck. I wanted to see this Annie girl in person (although I had already seen plenty of pictures of her: Eren has a thing for Internet stalking). I finally got to see her when Eren turned to introduce us.
"These are my friends, Armin and Mikasa and their dates, Christa and Jean"
"Hey," I observed Annie. She was slightly shorter than me with her blonde hair tied up in a ponytail. Her facial expression was a mirror of pain and suffering.
I knew much about that look; it greeted me every time I looked at my reflection.
Annie nodded towards us, as Eren made room for her on the couch. She was observing the room as if to look for something deadly.
Okay, maybe not: but her face could mean anything, pretty much stripped of emotion.
Again, very similar to the expression I keep on my face.I looked at Jean and tried to tell what he was thinking, but I found him staring at Annie.
I tried not to take offense, I was just observing her as well. That was no different, right?
I pulled my scarf up so it was above my mouth to hide me biting my lower lip. It really has become a habit, to try to mentally hide my emotions and I that didn't work, physically cover them.
Then, the dreaded pre-party "I don't know what to say or do" portion began. We were all essentially staring at each other, but pretending that we weren't. The only two at ease were Armin and Christa, for obvious reasons.
Me, on the other hand, was now halfway through the bottle of red wine. I was not drunk or anything, but I was definitely feeling a bit light headed. Even so, Eren was shooting me concerned looks. He always seems to know when something is off with me, so he attempted to try to change the mood.
He grabbed his phone and started typing away.
"Oh this looks like fun!" He exclaimed, as Annie looked over his shoulder and rolled his eyes. "Okay so you're one, two, three-"
Eren pointed his finger around the circle, and assigned as all numbers. I got number three, and I was about to question his idea, when he started speaking again.
"Okay, so," he said, looking down at his phone, "Number one- hey that's me- has to tell a funny story about number three and number six", over at number six, who ended up being Armin.
"Oh, I know what story this is going to be," Armin looked over at me, grinning.
I couldn't think of what he meant until it hit me. Oh god no.
I shot Eren the worst look I possibly could, but he ignored me and started this lovely tale of Armin and I.
"Okay, so in ninth or maybe was it tenth grade?" Eren looked at me for reference, but I continued my glares.
"Calm down Mika. Anyways, I think it was tenth grade, Mikasa had to get her wisdom teeth pulled and after words, she was all loopy from the laughing gas. So I decided to film her from the passenger's seat while Armin was with her in the back. I was recording, and the next thing I knew, Mikasa had Armin pinned against the window, making out with him", Eren clapped his hands, "The end".
I saw Annie crack a smile, while Armin and Christa were laughing. I tried to sink closer to Jean, but he tensed up.
It would have been fine to relive my day of stupidity, but not while my new boyfriend was here.
That one funny story had led to conversation amongst the others, but Jean and I held the awkward silence. As much as I wanted to say something, I couldn't bring myself to do it. There was nothing to be said.
