I sat contently outside the apprentice den munching on a starling with my friend Darkpaw. It was one of those lazy summer days in which the harsh sun beat down on our pelts, and no one seemed to feel like doing anything. My jaws gaped open in a yawn. Although it seemed like a day for rest, Willowstar insisted that each member do their part. I noticed Leafclaw and Sunfoot padding into the camp, each with a plump vole in their mouths. Willowstar went and thanked them, before trotting up to me. I was slightly embarrassed; after all, I was just laying on the ground with my eyes half-shut whilst the warriors had their faces screwed up in the heat of the sun. I looked up cheekily and she questioned with a demanding gaze, "Fallenpaw, Darkpaw, what are you doing to help the clan?" I tried to regain my composure; it seemed her eyes were searching my soul. "Oh-um.." I stumbled. "You two look like you could use some work - how about you go check the elders for ticks?" Darkpaw cast a sideways glance at me. We both knew we were about to pay for our laziness. "Yes.. Willowstar.." Darkpaw mewed. I brought myself to my feet. I winced; the bones in my right front foot had never truly healed after the fall I took as a kit. Our medicine cat, Mistypelt, had said it may never heal. Darkpaw looked at me with sympathy in his amber eyes and we padded over to the elder's den.
