Iron Man's Promise
Adalia
I never thought my life would come to this...I never thought my secret identity would be revealed to the world...
I never thought I'd be in a position where saving the world makes me a villain...
I lived a fairly normal life, albeit a few missions I've done as a short-lived Avenger beside my partner in crime, Peter Parker. Together, Peter Parker and I joined the Avengers rather quickly, fighting more than familiar faces on our very first mission. We were recruited by Tony Stark, and fought with him on his team against Captain America's team. It was surreal, really, but Peter and I knew that we belonged.
We finally belong in a world where we help people.
We became two of the youngest and smartest Avengers aboard the team with the likes of Tony Stark, Captain America, Natasha Romanoff, and more.
One day we were two kids in high school, preparing for our next exams, and the next we became heroes, fighting aliens in outer space to save the world.
I wouldn't change it for the world, though. I yearned to make a difference in the world, and so did Peter.
I will admit, however, that the pressure of being a kid in high school, hiding their secret identity from family and friends was hard. After school, and often during school, Peter and I would ditch to fight crime, and keep people safe from harm. Our grades would suffer, but we'd get back on track over late night study sessions. Our best friends, Ned and MJ, would berate us with questions about our whereabouts and constant absences. But it wasn't until Peter and I were caught in our suits in his room by Ned, and we exposed our secret; MJ, on the other hand, found out during our school's Europe trip, and she knew Parker and I were heroes.
Although I was helping the world, my family took it the hardest. As a Mexican-American only child, my parents, who migrated from Mexico to New York City, expect the absolute most from me; to earn excellent grades, attend a four-year university, and have a career that will support me with a steady income. I had to grow up fast, and take responsibility. I was never to stray away from their high expectations because I have the opportunity to do what they couldn't in their native country and the United States. I did what I was told, and I made them proud, but it all ended when I told them I was an Avenger...
They knew from the moment my grades began to slip that something was wrong. I was the perfect student who never came close to failing. I was always at the top of my class with Peter Parker, who in my parents' eyes was a good influence. My parents adored Peter, and his Aunt May; in return, Peter and Aunt May cared for my parents just as much. It all ended, though, when I was no longer the perfect daughter. I'd come home late on several school nights from fighting crime, littered with cuts and bruises. My mother and father worried about me to no end, and often grounded me from leaving the house. They'd interrogate me, but I'd never tell them the truth; I was too scared to do it.
