A few weeks passed by after Gevanni returned with the results from his field work. The data collected matched perfectly with what Near had predicted. With this, the investigation proceeded smoothly, which meant a lot of late nights for Near in the future.
"Near," I said softly as I approached him from behind and rubbed his shoulders, "You really need to get some sleep. The case is at a stand-still until we get a report back from the chief of police anyways, so you might as well get some sleep while you wait."
"I wouldn't be doing my job properly if the report came back while I was asleep, Mika. I have a job to do." Near was not being mean at all when he said this. Actually, his voice was rather calm as it usually was. I knew his sense of duty was strong, but sometimes I wished he had that same dutiful attitude toward his health.
"We wouldn't dare receive the news and not wake you upon its arrival. The moment it comes in, Lidner will let you know, right?" I asked as I turned toward Lidner who was sitting at her seat.
"Certainly," she replied, "It should come in before Commander Rester returns. Even then, one of us here would let you know immediately," she assured.
I looked at Near with begging eyes, hoping that with Lidner's assurance, and my pleading, that he would comply. He sighed and looked up at me as I stood before him.
"You have got to stop begging me like that," he said playfully with a smirk, "It's getting harder to resist you."
I smiled back at him and took his hand in mine as I led him to a futon close to the corner of the room. I knew dragging him out of HQ would be a stretch, but as long as he got some sleep, the futon was good enough. I laid him down and pulled the blankets over him as he got comfortable.
"Are you treating me like a child?" he asked as I made sure he was tucked in.
"You tuck in the people you love, not just children," I replied as I leaned in and kissed him softly, "Get some sleep while you can, my love."
He looked away for a moment to think before speaking quietly.
"With that logic, I need to tuck you in whenever you go to sleep from now on."
I blinked for a moment in surprise. I could not believe I had just heard Near say something so adorable. I smiled with a small giggle and kissed his cheek; unable to resist how handsome he was at that moment.
"I'll be looking forward to it then."
I waited a few minutes for Near to fall asleep before I whispered to Lidner that I would be heading up for just a bit. I went to my shared room and laid in bed as I lost consciousness within my body and found myself back at the Atmospheric Library. I would have brought food for Wilson, but I remembered him telling me that he may not be in the office recently since he would be handling Azrael getting a new assistant in person. I went down the hall to my left and let myself into Wilson's office, hoping to take a gander at some of his books in his office to pass the time. When I went inside, I saw an angel that had the appearance of a preteen human boy sitting alone on a chair at the outstretched table. His black wispy hair laid elegantly against the back of his neck and just barely kissed the top of his shoulders. His bangs seemed long, but were swept to the side so as not to get in the way of the book he was reading. His shirt, along with the rest of his attire, was black, with the exception of a gold and red laced bow at the collar of his shirt. The long sleeved shirt, along with his shorts, somehow fit his aesthetic. This included the childish way he was sitting. The young angel looked up at me with his cold black eyes. Although I felt no cruelty in his eyes, he looked like all of his life, he had seen death. Upon seeing me, his eyes glistened and his attitude suddenly perked up.
