There was an original version of Danganronpa before it was reworked. It was way more gruesome, the colors are only black and white (Red for the blood).

The gameplay was purely a visual novel without any actions before more features were added. There is a Trust System which can change the fate of the students depending on the Trust meter.
Weird fact: Makoto's beta name is literally Shujinkō (主人公) which means "Protagonist".
