                 (Bird-hybrid AU)

Matt's POV

"Farewell, sweetheart! Make sure to keep in touch, ok?" My mom called out as I loaded my things into the car.
"I will, 'Ma! You too, Dad!" I assured them as I slammed the trunk shut.
I was opening the car door when mom came rushing up to me. "Wait, Matthew! One last thing before you leave.." I stopped in my tracks. She gave me a tight, genuine hug. My dad soon approached us and joined in.
Their warm embrace gave me a sense of comfort in my nervous situation. The thing is, I was moving in to a new house with a guy named Edd and a few others that I had yet to hear anything much about. Seems like it would make anyone anxious, right? Especially so in my case; I was a bird-human hybrid made as an experiment. I knew for a fact I'd be the odd one out.  I could see the awkward, trying-not-to-look-too-disgusted looks already.
After what felt like a long time for a hug, my parents let go with a gentle forehead kiss from my mom. "Good luck out there, Matt," My dad told me.
Normally, I'd be annoyed by how much they're smothering me, but I was especially grateful this time.  I really needed the extra support right now.  I hesitantly entered my car with a wave and started it up.
"You'll be ok, Matt.." I said to myself, trying hard to believe the words. I looked into my trusty purple hand mirror before beginning to drive. "Just look at yourself. Nobody would dare to disrespect someone as handsome as you.. right..?" I put down the mirror and hit the road.
After about an hour of driving, I arrived at the house. I took one last deep breath before exiting my car and walking up to the doorstep. I carefully rang the doorbell, the door almost immediately opening.
"Ah, you must be our fourth roommate!" A man with deep brown eyes and a green hoodie greeted. "Matt, right?"
I paused in pure shock, the best shock I've been in in a while.  Not only was he extremely welcoming, but he was a bird hybrid just like me. He appeared to be a dove hybrid, white feathers peeking out from the bottom of his sleeves and out the collar of his grey undershirt.
"Uh.. yeah!" I confirmed. "That's me!"
The dove grinned. "Awesome!" He exclaimed. "Tom, Tord! Our fourth roommate is here!"
"Just let 'em in," an accented voice called out from the living room; Norwegian, I believe. The dove moved to the side, allowing me to pass through the door.
The sight that laid within that door gave me the same blissful shock I was in when I first saw the green-hooded dove. The other two men were bird hybrids as well, one being a sparrow and the other being a hawk. The sparrow especially caught my eye, something about him was so enticing.  He had deep black eyes and smooth, light brown and black wings.
"Hey," said the hawk. "I'm Tord and the sparrow over there is Tom, you?"
I snapped out of my trance, trying my best to get back to reality. "Oh- m-my name's Matt! Well- TECHNICALLY it's Matthew, Matthew James Taylor for- if you want the full name but I like to be called Matt hahah.." I jumbled the words together, like when you don't know how to solve a puzzle so you just put down random pieces and hope for the best.
I could tell I sounded like an idiot just then. Great, I've only been in this house for less than five minutes and I've already made a fool of myself.  The combination of embarrassment, nervousness, and homesickness made my stomach churn like crazy.  Throwing up all over the carpet would really be the cherry on top of this embarrassing, anxiety-inducing metaphorical sundae.
The dove laughed. "Alright, Matthew James Taylor, would you like me to show you your room?" He asked. My feathers fluffed up a bit, as they did whenever I was very nervous, embarrassed, or anything of the sorts. The dove must've been able to tell. He chuckled and put a hand on my back. "Haha, just playing with you!" He assured me. "The name's Edd by the way, you probably already knew that though." I nodded, following him up the stairs with my luggage.
The second I got to my room, I set all the bags down by the closet and flopped onto the smooth sheets of the bed, slightly warm from the sun bathing them through the window. I decided to just shut my eyes and let my mind take over, getting lost in my thoughts. It's something I did often. Whenever I wanted to escape reality, procrastinate overdue homework, or simply when I was bored, I'd shut my eyes and go on a field trip through my own mind.
The first place my brain went was Tom. Boy did I admire him. I haven't even heard him speak yet but he's already blown me away. I wasn't quite sure if my feelings were romantic attraction or simply admiration. I liked men, that was for sure. For as long as I can remember I've liked them. Even in my youngest years watching cartoons, I'd admire both the handsome, brave superheroes and the lovely ladies they were saving from harm's way.  Pansexual is the word, I've been such ever since I knew of the label.
Tom this, Tom that. I kept pondering the topic for a great deal of time until I realized I've been cooped up in my room for way too long, especially since I just moved in. I marched downstairs and into the living room where everyone else was.
"Matt! There you are!" Edd exclaimed. "Here, have a seat." I sat down in the space on the couch he made for me.
"So, sorry if this is a bit personal, but how did you.. you know.. come to be?" Tom asked. It was my first time hearing his voice. There was nothing specifically special about it, but it eased my nerves. "Like, with the whole bird thing."
"Oh, well, I was made as an experiment," I explained. "I lived in the lab for a while but I was soon adopted by two humans when I was about six years old."
"Same!" The others said in unison.
I was grinning from ear to ear. Partially because I felt accepted, and the other part because Tom actually spoke to me. "Really? That's awesome!" I beamed. We all laughed and talked together, I finally felt accepted.

Tom's POV (this takes place about an hour later)

The house felt completely empty.  Edd was running errands, Matt was in his room unpacking, and Tord was God knows where. I hated when the house was empty or too quiet. I'd always end up getting lost in my thoughts without anything to distract me from them. This time, said thoughts were about Matt, and boy were they strong.
I just met the guy — hell, I hardly even got to know him — how could I already like him romantically?  I knew I was gay so it's not entirely impossible, but so soon?  Even my kindergarten crushes had more development than this. I know what they say, "it must be love at first sight!", but I say that's absolute bull crap.  Love at first sight is a made up concept by lazy filmmakers and writers that don't want to bother with realistic development of emotion, or at least that's what I believe.
After a little bit, I decided to go downstairs and get something to eat. I was getting a bit hungry, after all.  I went down the hall, down the stairs, and into the kitchen. To my surprise, Matt was in there as well.
He saw me shortly after I spotted him. "Oh, hey, Tom!"  He greeted.
Unable to get my words together, I responded with a wave. Seeing someone shortly after having romantic thoughts about them is quite an awkward experience. Considering the way I was feeling, maybe love at first sight *was* real.
I went to grab the refrigerator handle when suddenly, I felt another hand on top of mine. It was none other than the man himself, Matt. We stayed in that position for a moment, both blushing profusely with our feathers fluffed up.
After a few moments of standing there with our hands stacked, I decided to say something.  "Uhm- sorry- you- you can go ahead," I stumbled, slipping my hand away. He had no response, opening the fridge and grabbing a soda.
Not long later, he got a notification on his phone. "Oh, one of my moving packages is here!"  He pointed out. "I'll go get that."
The second he left, Tord walked in from the living room. "So, you're liking the pigeon, huh?" He asks.
I grabbed a sandwich from the fridge. "Well, yeah. He's pretty cool," I tell him.
He playfully jabs me with his elbow. "C'mon, you know what I mean!" He says. "I saw the way you were blushing when he touched your hand!"
My face heats up. "Pft, no," I stammer. "I- I'm not gay or anything, don't get the wrong idea."
"Nah, you totally are," he objects.
   "Nope."
   "Gay."
   "No."
   "Homosexual."
   "No.."
   "Homosapien."
   "NO."
   "Homogeneous."
I roll my nonexistent eyes. "Ok, now you're just saying random words," I snapped. "So what if I like him, anywho?"
"Aha! So you DO like him!" Tord confidently calls out. "I bet you two are gonna hug and kiss and make out a-"
I completely lash out on him. "NO, TORD. I DO NOT LIKE HIM AND NEVER WILL. I'LL DIE BEFORE I EVEN THINK ABOUT KISSING MATT," I shout, not even noticing the sound of the door opening.

Matt's pov

I could hardly believe what I just heard.  I didn't expect him to be in love with me, don't get me wrong, but to say it so harshly?
"Oh! I-I just remembered I forgot to unpack something.. I'll be back.." I lied. In all honesty, I just needed an excuse to go back upstairs to hide my broken heart.
I went into my room and instantly flopped on to my bed, crying. It felt like my heart was just ripped out of my chest, ripped into two, thrown in a blender, and tossed outside for squirrels and rabbits to eat.
"Look what you did, birdbrain!" I heard from downstairs, loud enough for it to be semi-clear even from inside my room.  It sounded a lot like Tom, but it was hard to tell. It was followed by some more muffled fighting and soon footsteps up the stairs.  I wasn't sure if they were coming for me, but I wiped my face and tried my best to conceal my tears ahead of time just to be safe.  Surprise, surprise. It WAS for me. I heard two knocks on my door soon after.
"Come in," I told them, trying to sound cheerful.
It was Tom himself, appearing to be a slight bit upset. "Hey, how 'ya doing?" He asks.
"Uh.. pretty good.. you?" I lied. Well, it wasn't entirely a lie. I felt at least a bit better that he stopped by. Maybe he didn't really mean what he said, at least I hoped.
He sat down next to me, averting his "eyes".  "Look, I'm sorry for what I said when you were coming in.." he said. "Tord is just.. difficult sometimes. He can really make me lose my temper and say things I don't really mean." He  moves a bit closer to me looks over at the door a few times, to make sure nobody's there I assume. "The truth is.. I actually DO.. like you," he confesses. "I know, it sounds dumb since I haven't even known you for a day, but it was really..."
I complete his sentence for him with a smile. "Love at first sight..?"
"Yeah.. that.." he says quietly, still looking down. "I never really believed in it, but considering how I feel about you, it must be real."
I smile so widely it made my cheeks hurt.  "You don't know how incredibly happy I am to hear that," I tell him, truthfully.  "Does this mean we can.. like.. you know..." I did a gesture of two hand "people" pressing their faces together to get my point across.
He smiled just as widely as I was. "I'd be thrilled."  We grabbed each other and shared a kiss. Right then, right there.
I always knew true love at first sight was real.
