So, this is just a random au I thought up a few days ago. It's kinda a combination of the Highschool AU and something totally different that I think is original?? Basically, Tom is a regular teenage boy and Edd, Matt, and Tord are ghosts that he ends up being very close with. I'd share more but I don't wanna spoil, all I'll say is this oneshot is about how he met Matt and if I make it a full story it will include how he met the others too. If I do make a full fanfic of this, consider this a sneak peek :))
I actually had something more valentine-y planned since I originally planned to finish this on vday but I scrapped the idea cuz it's honestly just super dry and cheesy. Plus, this is a LOT better imo. Anyways, enough talking and on with the story!
It was a dark night, right on the borderline of winter and spring. Me and and my "friend" group of some guys named Bryan, Christopher, and Neil invited me to a sleepover despite the fact they hate my guts.
"Ugh, this sleepover is so boring. All we've done is watch a movie and play Mario kart," Chris groaned. "Why don't we do something exciting?"
"Truth or dare?" Neil suggested.
Chris shook his head. "Nah, that's for 13 year old girls.. aha! I have an idea!" A smile grew across his face. "Let's play Mirror Man!"
Bryan grinned. "Hell yeah! That would be so awesome!" Him, Chris, and Neil began discussing how they'd proceed at playing the game.
I sat to the side in silence as usual. I was always left out, hell, the guys only ever befriended me because they thought my "eyes" were cool. They always made fun of me: calling me dumb, short (mind you I'm the average height for my age), gay, and even going as far as to call me occasional slurs. Neil was the only one that showed me the slightest bit of respect, but he'd cover it up most of the time around the others in fear of getting attacked just like I was.
I decided to barge in. " 'Mirror Man'? What's that?" I asked.
Bryan chuckled. "Do you seriously not know what Mirror Man is?" He asked as if I was joking. "It's the latest paranormal game. You play it by sitting a hand mirror on an empty bed, saying "mirror man" three times. They say he'll fly out of it and take your soul for his collection!"
I shivered a bit. I knew paranormal games were mostly bullcrap, but they still freaked me out, especially the ones involving potential soul-taking. I didn't object, however. I'd rather have my soul taken by a ghost then by three annoying boys.
Bryan smirked. "So, what are we waiting for? Let's all play!"
"Only two players at a time, genius," Chris teases. "I suggest we sacrifice our gay couple, Tom and Neil."
"I'm not gay, asshole!" Neil snaps. "Tom might be, but I'm not."
I was now trembling. Most paranormal games were fake, that's a fact, but I was scared to take any risks. Hey, at least Neil would be with me if it actually was. We walked into the bedroom and grabbed a hand mirror from the nightstand. We placed it on the bed as instructed and stood right by it.
"Ok.. do we just, like, chant now?" Neil asked me.
I shrugged. "I guess so. On the count of three, One, two, tree.." we began to chant.
"Mirror man!"
"Mirror man!"
"Mirror man!"
The formerly still mirror began to spin faster and faster, the reflective surface glowing a bright purple. Neil let out a squeal that could pass as a young girl and sped out of the room. I was quite shocked as well, but I didn't really sense any bad vibes from the mirror. In fact, something was telling me to go closer. I did as my instincts told me and stepped a bit closer to the possessed mirror.
The mirror was now spinning so fast it was nearly a blur and the light illuminated the entire dark bedroom. I saw a figure emerge from the light that appeared to be just a few inches taller than me.
"At last, my soulmate has called me!" A voice called out, coming from the light. The voice was very chipper and a bit high-pitched. He sounded just like a guy my age.
The light faded and the mirror stopped spinning. The figure fully emerged and levitated inches above the old, cream-colored carpet. He in fact was the ghost of someone my age with a purple aura matching the light that was shining from the mirror just seconds ago. He was a lean, tall boy with well-kept hair and an unzipped sweatshirt over a seemingly white tee. He appeared to be your average popular boy.
"S-soulmate?" I asked him after looking him up and down. "Is that what you call the people you collect souls from..?"
He tilted his head like a confused puppy. "'Collecting souls?'" He questioned. "I collect novelty toys. Where'd you get that from?"
I was just as confused as he was. When I was told there would be a ghost stealing my soul, the last thing I'd imagine was him. "Well... you know what, never mind. It's a long story. Anywho, about the soulmate thing.."
He instantly started nodding the second I said "soulmate". "Oh, yes!" He said. "We were dating in a past life, remember? I'm so glad you called upon me!"
Ok, this was getting weird. One second my fake friends force me to play some stupid ghost game and the next a spirit that's allegedly supposed to steal my soul is flirting with me?
"Uh.. I-I don't quite remember that, I'm sorry," I told him.
His smile drooped into a look of disappointment. It made me feel bad, honestly. "Oh, that's ok..!" He said, trying his best to stay upbeat. "Could I at least get your name? I forgot, haha."
"It's.. my name's Thomas, yours?" I asked.
"Ah, Tom!" He realized. "I was almost confident it was Tim.. anyway, I'm Matthew! Matt is heavily preferred, however."
"Ok.. Matt," I had no idea what to say. He seemed like a nice guy, I didn't want to reject him and hurt his feelings. At the same time though, I wasn't really interested in him the way he claimed. Besides, how would I date a ghost? Even if I knew how, I'd get stampeded with hate by everyone at school. It was a lose-lose situation to be honest.
Matt broke the awkward silence. "Well.. I guess I'll be headed back. If you ever happen to need me, you know what to do," he said. He floated toward the mirror and it sucked him in like a vacuum. As soon as I knew it, however, he peeked back out of the flat surface. "Wait," he told me. "Sorry if this is too much to ask but.. would you like to.. you know.. be friends?" He averted his eyes. "I know you don't really, like.. remember me, but I think it would be nice to at least be on mutual terms, y'know?"
I think about it for a second. Being friends with a ghost is much more possible then dating one and I'd get less bullied for it, so why not? "Sure thing," I tell him. "Whenever I need you I'll just say the word! Well.. two words repeatedly, but you get what I mean."
The ghost smiled. "That would be great, thank you!" He rose out of the mirror halfway and gave me a hug. Wow, I didn't know ghosts could do that. "Well, goodbye for now, Tim!" He calls. Before I could correct him, he disappeared.
To be continued??
