The story of how Indrajit got his name dates back to the time when the Gods were still ruling the heavens, it was during the time when he was called Meghnadh. As a part of an unparalleled conquest, having conquered Hell and the Earth, Ravana decided to invade heaven and rule the Gods. He marched his army of devils bravely into the gates of heaven which was then ruled by the King of Gods, Indra!
Days before Ravana attacked, Brahma himself came over to alert Indra of the upcoming conquest, but blinded by his ego and pride, Indra failed to acknowledge the warning from the creator. When Ravana attacked, Indra was unprepared, he sent bare minimum troops to stop the demon army of Lanka from breaking into the gates of Heaven, but the troops were crushed in no time. When the news of his first defeat as the ruler of Gods reached Indra, his pride was offended, he decided to enter the battle. He at once unleashed his godly strength and summoned all the legendary weapons he had at his disposal, in a tone of raging humiliation, he ordered his people to prepare Airavath, his favorite elephant for the battle. Bearing the title "King of the Elephants," Airavath is a divine creature who mastered the art of summoning the clouds. With a skin as white as snow and strength of a thousand elephants his name in itself was a terror. Airavath took orders from no one except Indra, when Indra boarded the golden howdah, the duo would be unstoppable.
Following the orders from their ruler, Airavath was soon equipped with his golden armor that covered his five heads and monstrously large body, his ten tusks were specially armed with swords forged out of iron extracted directly from the core of the Earth. With his entire army of gods each wielding their own special weapon, Indra stood facing the Lankan army on Airavath, determined to rebuild his shattered pride.
It was one fierce battle, one which was never witnessed in the history of heaven, one that completely destroyed the fertile land of heaven and painted it in red. In that battle between Pride and Power, the power eventually began to crumble. Ravana who fought with a demonic strength slaying everyone who came in his way, was taken down by the most powerful duo there was on the battleground, Airavath and Indra. With a mighty blow Airavath sliced through the impenetrable armor of Ravana which created an opening for Indra to strike. Indra made no mistake, he attacked Ravana with his most powerful weapon, following which Ravana fell unconscious on the ground. Victory was just a single blow away for Indra, with that single blow he could end the infernal rule of Ravana over the other two worlds, with that single blow he could reclaim his stature and most importantly for him, with that single blow he could satisfy his pride. Indra selected his weapon of choice precisely, a divine arrow gifted by the Destroyer! He aimed it at the open wound on Ravana's chest and fired, it went whirling following its prescribed trajectory but just when it seamed like it hit the target it disappeared and so was Ravana!
