Danny Torent's POV
The British Empire.
I haven't been here in the last two decades, and nothing seemed to have changed.
The men are still narcissistic arsehats, yet they care deeply for their wives and children. There is respect for all the ranks, no matter your gender, but when it comes to the ruling hierarchy, it's different.
The highest families are the Griffins; they are the leading families. The Reynolds is second in command, while the Wellington's were third.
Which explains why Penny's mother, Troy and Marcel were so close, but that was also their downfall. Since they were deemed traitors, they got debunked and slaughtered, except Marcel of course. And the Sandels proved themselves useful and got raised in the ranks.
Over time, it's always a man who rules. I know that sounds bad, but the reason is palpable, they believe that the women of the empire will do nothing but make it fall. That's not what I see when Penny does Deals.
The two of us are in her office examining files to get acquainted with them, to see the bigger picture. We have to prove that she is a worthy leader. It's the only way to keep the ones we love safe.
"Talked to Caleb lately?" She pretends to be very interested in the file she reads as if she didn't just ask me about her boyfriend's health.
"He just came back from New York, and is thinking of coming here to celebrate."
I'm still yet to wrap my mind around their relationship. They both look happy and content with each other; that alone keeps my mind at bay.
Files cloud the air because of how fast she dropped the one in her hand to give me her attention. "Really?"
Her eyes sparkled with excitement, and I bite my cheek to keep myself from smiling.
When she sees that, she stares death in my direction.
"I could have sworn that I was not related to Tiger."
"Same here. Where is Sam today? It's not like him to not be breathing down our necks while preparing us for the takeover."
Sam has been like an itch you can't scratch since we landed back on mother's soil. We sold the land back in America to them, packed and moved here to our family home.
With Jordan and Joey in the cells heavily guarded, I see myself joining in on their torture, but I won't put it past Penny not to stop me. So I don't tell her I have another mission apart from the one Sam wants me to do.
Her kind heart will get her nowhere as far as the people of this place are concerned. But as always, she just has her way of getting things done when need be.
We hear a hard knock on the door. We say at the same time, "Come in."
"Boss, you've got a visitor." A guard walks in.
He steps to the side, and allows a girl with a cloak on her head to come into view.
I reach for my gun at the edge of my belt while Penny does the same under the table. It's the same girl from the wedding. I haven't decided if she is a friend or foe yet.
"Relax, people, I come in peace." The girl says.
The hood on her head masks her face but fails to hide the evil smile that she is sporting.
"I just want to talk, nothing more."
"Feel free," I do a once over and see that the cloak covers her whole body, she could have a bomb strapped to her, but we wouldn't know.
