That day

Two years prior

Rain poured from the dreary evening sky. Thunder rumbled and lightning flashed in the distance. Puddled splashed beneath leather boots as Sarah raced through the streets.

"Wait for me!" she called with a laugh. Robert and Jean were far ahead, running past horse-drawn carriages and miserably soaked couriers.

She laughed when Jean's brother, Peter, came up behind and ruffled her hair.

"Come on, short stack!" he teased, using a nickname he'd given her long ago. "Last one there's a bad egg!"

Peter was two years younger than Jean, though he seemed older in height and maturity.

Water splashed when Jean and Robert leapt into the river. Peter was third, leaving Sarah to jump last. They laughed and splashed one another as they swam around.

"What took you so long?" Jean teased.

Sarah playfully glared and splashed him. He filled his mouth with water and spit like a fountain in her direction. With a joyful scoff, she swam away, knowing he'd follow.

As she climbed from the river and sat along the concrete bank, Jean followed. Peter was next and got comfortable next to his older brother.

"Guess you aren't the best, bro," Peter laughed.

"I was a close second!" Jean argued. "Besides, I still did better than you!"

"Yeah, while you were focused on winning I was keeping Sarah here company."

"Hey!" she remarked. "I was doing just fine on my own, thanks."

"Just fine losing," Peter teased.

"Laugh it up now Pete, but someday I'm going to be stronger and faster than you, and then we'll see who the loser is."

His laughter mixed with the sound of pattering rain."You keep practicing," he said, "I'm sure you'll beat me before Jean here does!"

Jean's face turned red. He pulled his brother into a headlock and rubbed his scalp with his fist. As the brother's wrestled, Sarah pulled her hair away from her face and eyed the river. Her smile faded as she stared at the water. "Jean..." she started. "Where is Robert?"

"What?" he asked while still holding his brother in a headlock.

"Where is Robert!"

They stood and scanned the water. Several yards away, floating face down in the river, was her brother. Diving into the river, Jean pulled lifted him up the bank. Peter and Sarah dragged him onto the street, where she began chest compressions.

"Come on!" she cried. "Please! You can't leave me... Come on Robert!"

Jean pushed her away and took over, working hard to bring him back. Peter cradled Sarah as they watched him struggle to save him. When Robert spit up water, everyone breathed a sigh of relief. He rolled over, coughing up the water from his lungs.

"Robert!" Sarah fell to his side and wrapped around him. "Don't scare me like that!" she cried. "What will I do without you? You and mom are all that I have..."

Present day

Crowds ran through the streets. People were trampled and killed as they raced to the inner gate. Sarah was motionless on her knees, staring with misty eyes at the rubble.

A surge of energy, like a flash of lightning, filled her with grief and pain. Jumping to her feet, she pushed through the growing crowd and climbed through the debris. "Robert!" she screamed. Her throat was bleeding and sore. "No! Please! Robert!"

She dug through the rocks. Her fingernails tore and skin was covered in dirt as she tossed loose stones from the building.

"Sarah!" her mother called for the fifth time. Only now able to hear it, Sarah turned. In her sorrow, she hadn't noticed the horrified screams in the distance, or the giant shadow that shrouded her in darkness.

Lifting her eyes, she was met with a titan. Its tight skin was stretched across a bony body. A large head, too big for its neck, looked down at the fragile, trembling girl. The titan was small, only five meters in height, which made it perfect for gliding through the streets so quickly.

Its large hand reached out for her, and she was frozen, staring into its large brown eyes.

"Sarah! Run!" her mother screamed.

Stepping back, Sarah tripped over a broken beam and fell. The titan pulled her close. Its large mouth opened and chomped deep into her arm. The pain was immeasurable as her bones crunched and skin bled.

Hot blood sprayed across her face as her mother stabbed the titan in the eye. With a hard kick, she forced it back and pulled her daughter away.

"Where is your brother!?" she screamed.

Sarah's tear-filled eyes moved to the crumbled market. Her mother gasped and clutched her chest. Stumbling back, she took several breaths. The ground rumbled as more titans wandered the streets. Blood fell from the air like rain as people were ripped and eaten. Their screams fell silent to the panic of those still living.

"We have to go!" Sarah was pulled aside and shoved to her horse.

"We can't leave him!" she cried.

"Do not argue with me," her mother said. "Get on the horse. Now!"

She climbed the saddle and reached out for her mom. When their hands met her mother was ripped away. The titan grabbed her by the waist and bit deep into her shoulder and neck. Hot blood splashed spilled from her body as she screamed and gurgled. Tendons snapped as it tore into her flesh.

Sarah was covered in her mother's blood as she watched her slowly fall limp. The weight of emptiness was crushing. Her eyes couldn't move from their place as she gazed into her mother's lifeless eyes.

As more titans appeared the horse took off, knocking over people as it raced down the street. Sarah was silent and still, unblinking and hollow, as they ran through the inner gate and left her family behind.
