PAIGE POV
I get home at about 5 pm after leaving directly from the last bell. I waist no time getting in my car and driving off without saying a word to anyone. I need to take the chance while Charlie was talking to his friends on the other side of the lot.
When I open the huge door to our house I go straight to my dad's office. I need to talk to him. I knock three times and wait for his response.
"Come in" I hear him say from behind the unnecessarily big door. With his approval I open the door and walk in.
"Hey papá," I say stupidly, knowing that we all know that when I use 'papá' I probably did something wrong. I see his face ready to ground me or yell at me when I jump back in and try to save my own ass. "I didn't do anything, I was just gonna ask you about what you told me on Sunday."
"Ok mija, go ahead." I flinched at his us of 'mija', he only uses it when he doesn't believe me. I let it go and sit at the chair in front of his desk.
I choose to go with honesty and spill everything. "Ok so I was in math class and Charlie the kid that sits next to me asked for a pen so I gave it to him and he said thanks P and I told him not to call me that and he asked why and I said I don't like it and then the teacher got mad and told me stop talking and I got worried because I didn't want to make a bad impression in math you know I like math so decided to go back five minutes to not have her think bad of me and when I grabbed Charlie's hand since he was the closest person,I went back... but I took him with me... turns out he can return in time too." I explain without stopping as fast as positive.
"Ok... that's ok... what's his last name?" He asks randomly.
"Uh... Grant?" I answer confused as to why he was asking.
He stands up and goes to his safe. I see him put in his pin and opens it. He takes out a journal and sits back at his desk. While he is looking through the pages of what look like hand written names, I sit quietly observing. "Oh yeah, here, Charles Daniel Grant, born 14 of November 2004, son of Matthew Grant and Sofia Garcia, now Sofia Grant" He says. I'm completely caught off guard by that. How the fuck does he know this. I also didn't know Charlie's mom was Hispanic or Latina, I've only even known her as Sofia Grant, not Garcia. Charlie does look more like his dad, so I could really tell by looks alone.
"How do you know that?" I ask the first and most important question.
"Ok here's a little history lesson. Many many many thousands of years ago there was the first one of us, I won't bore you with how it actually came to be but it did. We are long descended from the Aztec civilization. Only the first born get the power but here and there there's been twin so since that makes them both capable to bringing down the legacy the amount of us just kept getting larger and large. So don't worry, ours and Charlie's family aren't related, we just have a very very very old ancestor in common. All the people able to do this is required to inform the other families about any new members at the time of their birth. About a hundred years ago there as a massacre that reduced the number of us into just about 15 families. And the Garcias were one of them. It's a little complicated, but Charlie's abilities come from his mother since she is another of the 'gifted ones'" he air quotes 'gifted ones' making it clear he doesn't like that term.
It takes a few minutes for me to process all of that and my dad waits patiently. "Ok... I guess that explains it... is that journal full of all our names?" I ask curiosity taking over.
"Yeah, when I'm gone I'm gonna have to trust you with it, and then you'll give it to you first born and they'll give it to theirs." He says. "But you shouldn't have worry about that for a long while."
