Summer was moving fast. The decision to visit her father was an ever present one, and one that was running out of time. Meanwhile an unopened envelope sat on the counter of the Hardy residence with an Empire State University logo etched onto the corner. Felicia Hardy and Gwen Stacy stood in front of it, almost expectant, as if it would rise up and open itself.
"I think you should open it now.." Gwen mumbled, turning her gaze briefly to Felicia whose eyes remained trained on the white rectangle.
"In a minute..." Felicia mumbled, blinking once for the first time in awhile. It wouldn't read itself, she knew that, but for the first time in her life she was afraid of the consequences of opening such a letter.
"You said that 10 minutes ago.." Gwen pointed out, swaying gently back and forth on her feet, feeling agitated from standing in the same position for so long. The large grandfather clock that stood in the hall ticked back and forth, drilling a headache into the brunette among the silence. Felicia, now realising that she was being stupid, scoffed under her breath quickly lifting the letter and tearing it open. Once the envelope was dropped to the floor she span away from Gwen's prying eyes, her own eyes scanning down the page. She began to pace back and forth, biting her thumb causing Gwen to begin to worry. It was then that Felicia stopped in her tracks turning back to her friend, raising her gaze.
"I got in" She stated simply, still trying to compute it in her brain. With the stain that was her criminal record she was sure they'd reject her. But here she was actually achieving something good. Gwen let out a little squeal leaping forward giving the brunette a hug, the two jumping around the kitchen. And from that joy, Gwen decided to drop the bomb that would rip the smile off her friends face. She wasn't going to Empire State.
"I'm moving to England" She muttered into the hug, her heart sinking as she felt the girls shoulders fall pulling back.
"What do you mean?" Felicia let out a small confused laugh believing that the girl was joking in some form or another.
"I'm up for a scholarship to Oxford..molecular medicine. It's between me and this other kid. It could be him...but it could be me" Her eyes trained into Felicia's green irises, unsure how her friend would take the news "I hope it's me" She added quickly with a nod, biting her lip trying to stop herself from crying. Felicia's face drained of the joy that had lit it up only moments before, a very present lump now forming in her throat. Oxford..England. That was far away...like seriously far away. Her eyebrows knitted together in thought, trying to force herself to say something in the deflated silence. Her eyes finally met Gwen's, swallowing the lump in her throat. A small smile etched onto her lips, that masked the thought of losing her best friend for months on end.
"That's great news" She spoke dryly through the smile. It wasn't a forced smile as such. She was happy for Gwen. If anyone could get into Oxford it was her. Felicia knew she couldn't be selfish about this...she wouldn't. Getting out of this city and its ghosts was the best thing for her.
