At Least Try

The next day I was sitting with Peter in his kitchen. Gwen's dad was on the news. "At 9 P.M last night an incident took place at the Williamsburg Bridge. Much of what occurred is speculation at this point, but several eyewitnesses to the crime as well as our own preliminary findings have positively placed one individual at the scene. Which is why this morning I am issuing a warrant for the masked vigilante known as Spiderman."

I nearly spat out my milk. Peter looked down at his cereal. We were eating lunch while his aunt was doing the dishes. "Come on," he said to me and grabbed his bag. I got on my feet and placed our bowls in the sink. "See you later Misses Parker," I said before following Peter.

"Peter!" I shouted after Peter. He was already a little down the street. "Peter wait up!" I yelled and jogged up to him. "Are you okay?" I asked, but he only shrugged me off. "Come on, I really need to tell you something, can we go somewhere and talk?"

He looked around, before grabbing my waist and we left the ground. He took us to an abandoned place. "What was it that you wanted to say? There's nobody here so you can say anything."

"I was at Oscorp last night before dinner, and Doctor Connors was there."

"What about him?" Peter asked, opening a chocolate bar.

"There was this other guy there too, they were talking about starting human trials. I don't really know for what, but it seemed like it had to do with cross-species genetics from a lizard."

"Oh no," Peter mumbled. "I helped him with that."

"Norman Osborn is dying, and he needs it, the formula. They were going to pretend it's a flu shot and give them to regular people to see what happens. Doctor Connors seemed to be against it, but then... I mean I don't really get it but, okay here's the thing; they talked about your father, and you but mostly Richard."

"What? What did they say?"

"The other man said it was too late for shock and indignation, about 15 years too late and that Richard wore the lab-coat well but on Doctor Connors it was cheap, and then Connors said he had nothing to do with that. Peter? What is that?" I asked. Peter looked down at the chocolate and put it back into his backpack. "Then he asked if that is what he told you, and then he said that Richard was refusing to start human trials, and then he took the formula."

Peter looked up at me. "His death, Doctor Connors had something to do with my father's death."

"The lizard on the bridge, do you think that was that man?" I asked. He shook his head no.

"No, he wanted it for Norman Osborn. You know what, I'm going there tomorrow after school to see if Connors is there," Peter said.

"He got fired, I think he's out of there by then."

"I have to at least try."
