We were sitting on the bleachers during lunch. Both of us had little to no other friends. I had asked him to bring the spider, so I was inspecting it. "It's beautiful," I said. It was small and black and looked just like every other spider, but it had turned Peter from a boy to a boy with spider abilities. "Knows how to bite though," Peter joked.
"Does anyone else know about this?"
"Nope, only you." He smiled.
"Really?" I asked. I was suprised. At least maybe his aunt might have known. He nodded.
"Hey, you don't... you don't believe what the police are saying, do you?" he asked after a few seconds of silence. I shook my head no. "Peter of course not," I said. He looked down at his lap, thoughtful. "Does it scare you? I mean what you can do," I asked. He looked up at me and smiled.
"No, it doesn't. I think it's a gift."
"You got to lay low from now on thought," I said, and meant it. He was wanted by the police, and I knew that both my mom and Gwen's father would do anything to catch him.
"I can't do that, you know that thing on the bridge, that lizard or whatever, it got away. It would have killed those people on the bridge, and it could kill you. I gotta protect those people, and I gotta protect you."
"That's not your job," I said.
"Maybe it is. I need to use my gift you know..." he said, but went silent. He looked out on the field. The American football team was having practice during lunch-hours because it was in the middle of the season and they had to work out as much as possible, or at least that's what Tristian said. "I really liked kissing you," Peter said, and I let out a soft laugh. "You are a good kisser."
"Well you know, it was good for me too," I said, and we looked at each other. He leaned in. "Yeah?" he asked. Right before our lips could touch, Peter caught something. I looked at him and he threw the football back onto the field, and it hit the field goal so hard that bent.
"Hey, who did that?!" the coach shouted. I just looked at the field in utter surprise.
"Shit."
